AMES - Flooding continues to affect many roadways in the state, according to Iowa Department of Transportation (Iowa DOT) officials. Iowans are urged to closely monitor conditions and never enter a water-covered roadway.
Rumor control
• Savanna/Sabula Bridge: in Jackson County - Crews have been in the area clearing log jams from the bridge, but it remains open. The Mississippi River must rise three more feet to cause a flood-related closure at this location.
• I-380 is NOT closed and there are no plans at this time to close it. Rumors persist regarding the potential closure of I-380, specifically due to the rising waters and dual bridges over the Iowa River. The Iowa River feeds into Coralville Reservoir at the dual bridges. The water level is projected to reach 714.7 feet at this site. The 1993 high water level was 716.7 feet. If the water reaches the projected level, the northern-most girders of these bridges would be covered by less than a foot of water. (Bridge girders are located under the bridge and provide support for the deck and roadway surface.) The girders in the remaining length of the bridges would be several feet above the water. This situation would not be cause to close the bridges. Therefore, no closure of I-380 is planned at this time. However, the Iowa DOT will continue to closely monitor the water level at this location and respond appropriately.
Updated road closures since the June 11, 7 a.m. release
• I-380 and 1st Avenue interchange: in Linn County (ramp closures only) - The northbound I-380 entrance ramp (#19C) to 1st Avenue West and the southbound I-380 exit ramp (#19B) have been closed due to flood waters over 1st Avenue West in downtown Cedar Rapids. I-380 remains open.
