DES MOINES (AP) -- A former Iowa State University assistant basketball coach will enter a guilty plea this week to charges relating to his arrest for receipt and possession of child pornography, his lawyer says.
Randy Brown is scheduled to appear before U.S. District Court Judge Ronald Longstaff for a sentencing hearing at 9 a.m. Friday.
Brown, 46, initially was charged in a federal criminal complaint on March 3, 2003, with possession of visual depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct, as well as obstruction of justice.
Brown resigned his basketball post with Iowa State that day.
Brown was indicted on one count of receipt of child pornography and one count of possession of child pornography. No obstruction charge was included in the grand jury indictment.
Tim McCarthy, Brown's lawyer, confirmed that the hearing would include the entry of a guilty plea and sentencing. He declined to say whether Brown would plead guilty to one or both counts of the March 11, 2003 federal grand jury indictment.
McCarthy said he would urge Longstaff to consider a reduced sentence for Brown because he has undergone intensive counseling and treatment.
Brown, an assistant basketball coach at Iowa State from 1999 to '03, could receive up to a 15-year prison term and a $250,000 fine for each count.
McCarthy said that federal guidelines allow for reduced sentences if a defendant goes through extensive counseling and other significant rehabilitation steps.
Much of Brown's court file has been sealed by court order, but documents indicate he has been in rehabilitation and counseling since investigators searched his home and office in January 2003.
Federal investigators initiated the investigation in 2002, when they identified Brown as participating in computer online chats with an individual purporting to be a 15-year-old female.
In January 2003, federal investigators served search warrants on Brown's home, as well as his work area at the Iowa State basketball offices. Investigators seized two computers, along with 23 floppy disks, 14 compact disks and a number of broken disks, records show.
Search warrant affidavits indicate Brown acknowledged in an interview that he had downloaded nude pictures of minor females and disseminated adult pornography to the females he believed were minors, and others, on the Internet.
Brown was head coach at Stetson University from 1995 to '97, an assistant at Miami of Ohio from 1991 to '93 and has been an assistant at Drake. He was hired by Iowa State in 1999.
