WATERLOO - Two people have been taken to the hospital following a high-speed accident Thursday morning.

Police and firefighters were called to Hess Road under the U.S. Highway 20 overpass between Lost Island Adventurepark and Crossroads Center at about 10:45 a.m. and found a Chevrolet Corvette on its top and two people trapped inside.

Rescue crews used the Jaws of Life to lift the car enough to pull one to safety, said Battalion Chief Mike Jenn with Waterloo Fire Rescue. The other was removed after forcing open a door, he said.

Officials said both men were conscious and talking when they arrived.

Identities of the two weren't available.

A witness who was driving on Hess Road said the Corvette was one of two cars that zipped past him as he headed into the city.

"It was unreal, I couldn't believe anyone going that fast," said Claude Woodruff of Waterloo.

He said both cars were behind him. One passed him and continued on, and then the Corvette went around him.

After passing, the Corvette went into the gravel on the side of the road and lost control, Woodruff said.

The Corvette skidded to the left side of the road and began to roll through weeds before slamming into the concrete overpass support. It bounced off the support and came to a rest on its roof.

"The other car, I don't known what happened to it," Woodruff said.
