WATERLOO - With the recent severe weather in Waterloo, the city of Waterloo Engineering and Waste Management Services departments would like to ask all Waterloo residents to check the storm sewer intakes next to the homes for blockage from debris.

Debris (i.e. twigs, leaves, grass clippings, trash) covering storm sewer inlets will slow or prevent the flow of storm water into the inlets, which results in water ponding in the streets and gutters.

They ask that while maintaining your yard, take a moment to check any storm intakes next to your property. By clearing the mouth of the intakes, you can minimize street flooding and protect you and your neighbor's property.

City staff also would like to remind citizens that the discharge of grass clippings into the streets is against Waterloo ordinances. Grass clippings can accumulate and clog the storm sewer system, which could cause flooding and damage to yours or others properties. Additionally, the water collected by the storm sewer system is not treated before it joins our creeks and rivers. Decaying organic matter (like grass clippings) depletes the oxygen in the water, suffocating fish.

If you notice that an inlet is full of debris or not working correctly or have any questions or comments, please contact Waste Management at (319) 291-4553 or the Engineering Department at (319) 291-4312.
