TAMA - Thirty-five people on a tour bus headed to the Meskwaki Casino near Tama were injured Wednesday morning in a crash.

The injured were transported to Marshalltown Hospital, but names and conditions were not available.

The Iowa State Patrol said the tour bus was driven by Marc Rood, 38, of Marion.

Troopers said a Ford Taurus being driven by Ronald Kitch, 79, of Cedar Rapids, was eastbound on Highway 30 and for unknown reasons crossed the center line and struck the westbound bus.

The accident occurred about two miles west of Tama on Highway 30 about 11:30 a.m.

The crash sent the tour bus into the north ditch and turned on its side.

Kitch was injured in the accident as well. He also was taken to the Marshalltown hospital.

Ambulances were called from Garwin, Montour, Traer, Le Grand, Tama and Toledo. Multiple ambulances left the scene with lights and sirens running.

Deb Larson, of Brandon, was driving behind the westbound bus when the accident occurred. She said a red car with a man and a dog inside crossed over and drove into the bus.

Larson got out of her car and approached the car involved in the accident. She said the man told her he wanted to die and asked if he was dead.

The bus overturned and rested on its right side in the north ditch.

Traffic was diverted north of the highway to avoid conflicts with the Register's Great Annual Bicycle Ride Around Iowa route from Montour into Tama and Toledo. Traffic is being diverted at county road T47. RAGBRAI traffic was previously planned to be routed along West Lincoln Highway, away from the accident scene.
