Shirley Ann Conry, 68, died peacefully at her home in Sun City West, Ariz., on March 15, 2008, after a long, courageous battle with cancer.
She was born Aug. 20, 1939, in Dyersville, to Nic and Olivia Gengler, and later moved to Waterloo. Shirley graduated from Our Lady of Victory Academy in 1957 and Loras College, Dubuque, in 1982, with a bachelor's degree in social work.
She married her high school sweetheart, Dan, on June 25, 1960, and is survived by him and four sons, Michael (Ann) of New York City, Patrick (Deb) of Waverly, Timothy (Christina) of Roselle, Ill., and Sean (Lauren) of Gilbert, Ariz. She also will be greatly missed by six grandchildren, Courtney, Casey, Nicolas, Nathan, Jack and Declan.
Also survived by two sisters, Catherine (Don) Schmitz of Washburn and Betty Linebarger of Freeport, Ill.; brother, Paul (Mary) Gengler of Waterloo; sister-in-law, Catherine Gengler of Tucson, Ariz.; and many loving nieces and nephews.
Shirley joins her parents; brother, Lou, and brother-in-law, Fred Linebarger, in heaven for the family reunion.
Prior to moving to Arizona, she worked for Operation New View, Project Concern and the Foster Grandparent programs in Dubuque. She was a case worker for Luzerne Country Children and Youth in Wilkes-Barre, Pa.
Shirley most recently worked as a starter at Pebblebrook Golf Course in Sun City West and also tutored for Club Z - third-graders for the "No Child Left Behind" program in Surprise, Ariz.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to: Shirley Conry Memorial Scholarship at Loras College, Dubuque; Hospice of the Valley, Phoenix; and Mayo Clinic, Scottsdale, Ariz.
The funeral Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. at Christ the King Chapel on the Loras College campus, Tuesday, April 1.
