WATERLOO - James R. "Jim" Martin, of Waterloo and Fort Lauderdale, Fla., died Aug. 14 in Fort Lauderdale.
He was born Feb. 13, 1943, in Iowa City, son of Dr. Carroll James Martin and Louise Cannon Martin. On Aug. 24, 1963, he married Linda Bjornstad in Spencer.
He received his bachelor of arts and juris doctorate of law from the University of Iowa, Iowa City. During his career he served as an assistant attorney general for the state of Iowa, assistant Black Hawk County attorney, practiced law in Cedar Falls, was a National Bank of Waterloo trust department attorney and was a compliance trust plan attorney with the First of American/National City Bank in Michigan and American Express in Minnesota.
He served on the Waterloo Covenant Hospital Foundation board, Black Hawk Bicentennial Commission, Adults Care, Exceptional Persons, Cedar Arts Forum, First Congressional Church deacon board, was Waterloo/Cedar Falls Symphony board president and Center for Civic Education state and national judge for secondary student competitions on We the People, the Citizen and the Constitution, and Project Citizen.
He held memberships in the Waterloo Elks Club, the Saginaw Bay Yacht Club and was a life member of the Iowa Alumni Association and Iowa Law School. He supported the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center and the Waterloo Center for the Arts Youth Pavilion.
Survived by: his wife; a son, Todd (Eda) of Rockville Centre, N.Y.; a daughter, Jennifer Martin (Michael) Casey of Cedar Rapids; four grandsons, Maxwell and Jake Martin of Rockville Centre and Benjamin and Samuel Casey of Cedar Rapids; a sister, Carol Martin (Pete) Schlicher of Washington state; two brothers, Steve (Debbie) of Arizona and Mike (Brigette) of Oregon; two brothers-in-law, Otto (Ginger) Bjornstad of Arizona and Jerrold (Judy) Bjornstad of Colorado; a sister-in-law, Barbara (Eddie) Quinn of Arizona; and nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by: his father; his mother; a brother, Tom; his stepmother, Marcella Martin; his grandparents; and an aunt and uncle.
Memorial celebration: 2-4 p.m. Oct. 26 at the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center at the University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls.
In lieu of flowers, memorials: may be directed to the Waterloo/Cedar Falls Symphony at the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center for the Waterloo Center for the Arts Phelps Youth Pavilion.
His family will hold Jim in their hearts forever.
