Dr. Robert "Bob" T. Guthrie, 68, of Silverthorne, Colo., formerly of Waterloo, died Feb. 15, 2008, as the result of a skiing accident at Arapahoe Basin, Colo. A memorial service will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, at the Covenant Hospital Chapel. Dr. Guthrie's remains were cremated and his ashes will be placed in sites special to he and his family. Memorials may be made to the Covenant Foundation.
Dr. Guthrie was born in Emmetsburg, but spent most of his early years in Clear Lake. He was the son of Theodore and Mary Guthrie, and brother of Mary (Bishop) and Ann (Schlader). He graduated from Clear Lake High School, participating in several sports, was an avid water skier, and became an Eagle Scout. His family fondly remembers the many holidays spent at the only blue house in Clear Lake.
After graduation from Clear Lake High School, Bob attended Creighton University and graduated from the University of Iowa School of Medicine. He married Jan at the end of his senior year. Bob and Jan then moved to Los Angeles, where Dr. Guthrie completed his internship at L.A. County Hospital, and son Robert was born. Bob then volunteered to join the U.S. Navy, completing aviation medicine training at Pensacola, Fla. He was later assigned to VF-101, "The Grim Reapers", in Key West, Fla.
Characteristically, he loved to fly F-4 Phantoms whenever he could! Dr. Guthrie then returned to Iowa City to complete his training in radiology, where son Theodore was added to the family.
During his 25 years in Waterloo, Dr. Guthrie designed and implemented the Covenant Cancer Treatment Center, which was the first comprehensive cancer treatment facility in the state of Iowa. He and his staff started the first Hospice program for terminally ill patients in the state, and the program continues to be very successful. Dr. Guthrie's professional life as a radiation oncologist is marked by the determination and compassion he and his staff exhibited while treating patients with cancer. He is remembered by staff and patients as an "old school" physician; a doctor who made the care of, and respect for, his patients his highest priority. He served as the chief of staff at Covenant Hospital, and was a member of the American Radiological Society.
It was during his time in Waterloo that Bob developed his lifelong passion for cycling. He rode on the first RAGBRAI, and he and his wife Jan took annual cycling trips with friends to Wisconsin. Racing as an amateur cyclist for over 20 years, Bob was a state champion and competed at the nationals. In Colorado, Bob was a certified spinning instructor, teaching spinning classes at the Silverthorne County Rec Center. He was a driving force behind the Summit County Bike Club, and in the development of new bike path in the county. He traveled several times with his son Rob to ride the cols and passos of France and Italy.
Also in Waterloo, Dr. Guthrie continued his involvement in scouting. He was Troop master for Troop 17 at Kingsley School for several years. He and Troop 17 traveled several times to Canada, and camped and canoed all across the state of Iowa.
After moving to Colorado and marrying Bonnie, Dr. Guthrie became an avid skier and mountaineer. He was a guide for a group of skiers known as "The Over the Hill Gang," and brought his enthusiasm to all his activities with the OHG. He often skied over 80 days a year, taking heli-skiing trips to Canada when he needed a little challenge. Recently, he and Bonnie trekked through the mountains of Peru, and had previously climbed in Nepal. He is greatly missed by all his friends in Colorado.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Bonnie; ex-wife, Jan; sons, Robert and Theodore; sisters, Ann and Mary; and several nieces and nephews.
