JoAnn Butler (1949-2009)

WAVERLY - JoAnn R. Reimer Butler, 59, of Waverly, died at home Thursday, Feb. 19.

She was born Oct. 1, 1949, in Waterloo, daughter of Melvin and Viola Barth Reimer. She married Michael Butler on May 27, 1978, at First Presbyterian Church, Cedar Falls

Mrs. Butler graduated from Northern University High School, Cedar Falls, in 1968. She graduated from the University of Northern Iowa in 1972 with a bachelor's degree in elementary education and mathematics. She received her master's degree in 1976 in Administration and supervision. She spent 35 years in the Denver school district, starting at Denver Elementary in 1972 and later moving to the middle school where she spent the last 19 years of her career as principal. She retired in June 2008.

She was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church

Survived by: her husband; two sons, Joshua Michael of Buffalo Grove, Ill., and Jonathan Matthew of Studio City, Calif.; a daughter, Jennifer Michelle Butler of Gilbert, Ariz.; her parents, Melvin and Viola Reimer of Cedar Falls; a brother, Dennis (Janet) Reimer of Cedar Falls; nieces, Kristy Reimer of Salt Lake City and Laurie Reimer of Cedar Falls; and her mother-in-law, Ruby Butler of Des Moines.

Preceded in death by: her father-in-law, Neil Butler.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, with burial in Harlington Cemetery, both in Waverly. Public visitation from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly.

Memorials: may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice, Waverly, Redeemer Lutheran Church or to the family for a later designation.

On top of the many hours spent at school, JoAnn enjoyed attending UNI sporting events with her family and especially enjoyed all of her children's activities at Waverly-Shell Rock, Drake University and Luther College.

JoAnn was a member of FS Chapter of TTT, ADPi Sorority, School Administrators of Iowa (SAI), National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP), and a local cross stitch group.
