JANESVILLE - Larry D. Brownson, 74, of Janesville, died Wednesday, Jan. 7, at Country View, Waterloo.
He was born April 29, 1934, near Broken Bow, Neb., son of Laurence and Grace Ferguson Brownson. On Aug. 7, 1955, he married Sharon Meiners at First Methodist Church, Waverly. She died in 2001.
Mr. Brownson graduated from Waverly High School in 1951, Wartburg College in 1955 and earned his master's degree from Northwest Missouri State University in 1982. He began his teaching career at Estherville High School, where he taught from 1955 to 1956. He then went to work with his dad at Larry's Shell Station from 1956 to 1964. He taught at Janesville Consolidated High School from 1964 until his retirement in 1994. He spent many of his summers working for Gipple Construction; was a member of the Lions Club and the Cedar Valley Stamp Club; and had coached wrestling for 15 years, after which he was the announcer for wrestling meets and football games.
Survived by: two daughters, Ann Ellen Brownson of Charleston, Ill., and the Rev. Beth Mary (Jack) Straw of Cedar Rapids; a son, Kirk Andrew (Barbara) of Jesup; five grandchildren, Sarah (T.J.) Brown, Adriane (Chad) Carlson, Amanda (Brian) Busch, Natalie (Jacob) Feuerbach and Henry Brownson; 13 great-grandchildren; a brother, Jack (Lois) Brownson of Los Altos, Calif.; and a sister, Kay (Don) Lahr of Raymondville, Texas.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home, Waverly, with burial in Oakland Cemetery, Janesville. Public visitation from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.
Memorials: may be directed to Mount Hope United Methodist Church or Janesville Athletic Boosters.
