- S.E., Worthington, Ky.
A: Crispus Attucks (1723-1770), a mariner, is said to be the first to die from the gunshots that would become known as the Boston Massacre. The others were Samuel Gray (a ropemaker) and James Caldwell (a mariner). All died on the spot. Two others died later. They were 17-year-old Samuel Maverick, who passed the next morning, and Patrick Carr, a leather worker, who died two weeks later.

- A.S., Woburn, Mass.

Q: Who is the official mascot of the San Diego Padres?
- J.B.L., Provincetown, Mass.
A: The Swinging Friar, not the San Diego Chicken, as commonly believed is the Padres mascot. San Diego radio station KGB-FM created the Chicken in the early 1970s. Ted Giannoulas, a student at San Diego State University, was hired to wear the suit. His wild antics made the Chicken a crowd favorite, and he appeared at hundreds of Padres games. In 1977, KGB-FM fired Giannoulas. A lawsuit two years later allowed Giannoulas to continue to wear a chicken costume. The Sporting News named the Chicken one of the 100 most powerful people in sports for the 20th century.
