TAMA - Tequila Rose, chocolate Kahlua, southern peach, orange delight and pink champagne.
At many wedding receptions, these are tasty flavors found at the bar.
But if George Fowler puts his mark on a wedding reception, those are the delicious flavors of the cake.
"The idea is to give your wedding guests a choice," said Fowler. "Gone are the days of the all-white cake. Today's wedding cakes can be done in a variety of flavors and textures in unique designs."
With signature designs embellished with molded roses, lace hearts and his popular "George" border, Fowler, owner of Cakes By George, describes his technique as "different."
"George will do exactly what you want him to do," said Debbie Reynolds of Sioux City, who hired him to make her daughter's wedding cake. "We wanted to mirror the style of my daughter's dress with the simple draping of satin fondant down the tiers of the cake," Reynolds said. "We added small ivory roses on each layer and fondant pearls around the base of each tier, similar to the pearl beading on her dress."
While Fowler's cakes look exquisite, wedding guests aren't truly treated until they take the first bite. Unique cake flavors are his specialty, and brides are clamoring for his work.
"Red velvet cake is becoming popular with young people in the Cedar Valley," Fowler said. "It reminds them of the cake their grandmother used to make."
Fowler moved back to Iowa from California five years ago. He was a University of Iowa music major when he began playing the organ at weddings on weekends. It was then that Fowler began dabbling in wedding cakes on the side. After playing the organ for one wedding, he would hurry off to deliver a cake to another.
"I discovered that I really enjoyed making wedding cakes versus a traditional job," Fowler said. "When it comes to food, if people like what you do, they'll let you know. I can tell by the look on their face when they take their first bite if they like my cake."
Breana Adamus, owner of Simply I Do, a new formal wear store on Hudson Road in Cedar Falls, got a taste of Fowler's cake flavors at a recent bridal show.
"My dad is in the food service business in Minneapolis and he thought that George had the best flavor options in Iowa," she said. "I think that wedding cake tiers in different flavors is a great idea. You want to have something trendy and different that is cool for your guests to try."
