Ask today's house hunters what they desire in a dream home and the list likely will include curb appeal, granite countertops, spa shower and custom woodwork.

Add to the list energy-efficient windows, appliances and heating and cooling units and interest in green building techniques and materials.

Finding "home, sweet home" is a quest for beauty, comfort and practicality, as well as form and function.

Many of those features and others are showcased on the 2009 Cedar Valley Parade of Homes.

The event begins Wednesday and continues Friday, Saturday and next Sunday.

Custom and remodeled homes will be open for public viewing in Waterloo and Cedar Falls.

"As far as trends go, it's totally flip-flopped from a few years ago. People used to want as much finished space as possible - the finished basement - and the fireplaces and Jacuzzi tub. Those are out the door," said Kyle Larson of LCG Homes.

Instead, he said, "everybody wants energy-efficiency, heat pumps, granite counter tops, big showers, steam showers, multiple shower heads, tile … . People want houses with richer aesthetics, rather than just finished space."

Locally, builders are keeping busy with new projects and remodels, although the tightening credit market makes it more challenging for many homeowners to get construction loans.

"I think there's a little bit of holding their breath by people who eventually want to build a new home. If they really want a new home and can get the financing, they're going for it because the interest rates are favorable," said Reed Hunemuller of Harting & Hunemuller in Cedar Falls.

He's also seen increased interest in remodeling. "If a homeowner likes the neighborhood and their neighbors, it may make sense to update their house. Generally, it's the kitchen or bathroom, updating a bedroom into a master suite or empty-nesters who want a little more room for when the kids and grandkids come home."

Homeowners also can take advantage of current tax incentives to upgrade windows and improve ventilation systems.

The annual Parade of Homes is one of the largest real estate events in the Cedar Valley and is expected to attract thousands of potential home buyers. The Northeast Iowa Homebuilders Association and Courier Communications are sponsors of the event.

Potential home buyers and people interested in building their own home or remodeling an existing home can view what is available in the market, explore possibilities for remodeling or additions, as well as the quality workmanship of contractors in the Cedar Valley.

Tickets are $7 per person, good for all homes on the tour. Tickets will be available at any of the participating parade homes.
