Amp up your school spirit with body paint
The most spirited University of Northern Iowa fans don't bother with team T-shirts or sweatshirts. They use the God-given canvas of skin to show their school spirit. At every game there are a few fans hard-core enough to break out the purple and gold body paint.
"With the increased student involvement we've seen this year, we've seen a lot more excitement, and this is one way they show it," said Leon Costello, associate athletic director at UNI.
Here's a list of do's and dont's for applying face and body paint, courtesy of WikiHow and Waterloo's Hobby Lobby.
Do pick the right kind of paint. Make sure the paint you choose is approved by the Food and Drug Administration as safe to use on skin. Most water-based paints are best, as they wash off easily. Avoid acrylic, oil-based or craft paints. Most craft stores sell face paints and skin-safe Tempra paint.
Don't use your hands to apply paint. Flexible brushes should be utilized, as well as sponges for large areas, such as your back. Sponges, soap and water are the best way to remove paint, and rubbing alcohol can be used for stubborn marks.
Do use design templates. Use the Internet to glean design tips and color schemes. Find the UNI logo at unipanthers.cstv.com and practice on a piece of paper before applying to your skin.
