CEDAR FALLS - Ceramics artist Jim Kerns expects to fire at least one kiln, possibly two, in preparation for Saturday's ARTapalooza on Main.
"The better body of work I can put together, the more choice the buyer has," said Kerns. In recent years, his work in porcelain and stoneware has evolved from less work on the potter's wheel and more hand work. "And I'm getting some real vivid glazing."
The fourth annual juried show takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the streets and sidewalks of downtown Cedar Falls. Admission is free.
Kerns and 39 other artists will display and sell their artwork. There also will be live music, entertainment and demonstrations, along with plenty of children's hands-on arts activities.
"This is our fourth. It's a community getting together - people socializing, performing arts and kids coming down to participate in art projects. We see people we don't run into that often, who come down to see what kind of work we're doing," the artist said.
Jan Andersen said the show will feature 20 new artists. "We're becoming better known as an event, and we're pulling artists from a larger area. We also get good feedback from artists who have participated in previous shows."
Sixty-five percent of artists represent Iowa, Nebraska and Wisconsin.
For the first time, ARTapalooza will feature two students as emerging artists. They are Anne Ore, mixed medium, a student at Holmes Junior High School, and jewelry-maker Amelia McMurrin, who attends Cedar Falls High School.
"They had to apply and submit their work to be juried, like the other artists. We wanted it to be a legitimate experience in an art show," said Andersen.
