Q: Tell me about Don Adams, the original Maxwell Smart.
- LA.M., San Pedro, Calif.
A: Born Donald James Yarmy on April 13, 1923, in New York, Don Adams took the surname of his first wife, singer Adelaide Adams, as his stage name. He loved horse racing and spent much of his time at the track. He also was a frequent guest at the Playboy Mansion, where he enjoyed playing cards. A history buff and a gifted poet and painter, Adams wanted to act in more serious roles as he aged; however, he felt typecast as a comedian, so he never got the chance to fulfill that desire. He remained good friends with "Get Smart" co-star Barbara Feldon until his death on Sept. 25, 2005, in Beverly Hills, Calif., of a lung infection.
