Local people reveal their secret escapes
"Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" re-runs, spoonfuls of Nutella, gossip magazines, online splurges and shoes. What's your guilty pleasure? We asked a number of locals about their temporary escapes from life's merry-go-round. Some wouldn't admit to having a guilty pleasure while others admitted to having more than one. Here's what they said:
Derek Grote, Cedar Falls
"Horrible B-list movies. I recognize their paper-thin plots and equally-deep characters are a waste of precious time, but I love a movie with a mutant ant. Also reality television for some reason. They have just as many radioactive monsters."
Lisa Schmit, Jesup
"I could be just sitting and reading a book. I rarely, rarely get time to do that. I don't really feel guilty about it, I feel like I deserve it sometimes. "
Patrick Sperfslage, Aurora
"Buying antiques because I like them."
Tracey Williamson, Waterloo
"I don't really have any. I don't feel bad about the stuff that I do. If I'm going to do it, I'll do it. I shouldn't feel guilty about it."
Megan Johnson, Oelwein
"Eating ice cream right out of the carton. James (Stammeyer, her fiance) and I will sit there, and we'll hand each other a spoon."
Laura Kaus, Hudson
"Anything chocolate, because it's so good. Purses and shoes - I love them, too."
Anna Seibert, Cedar Falls
"Sweatpants and ice cream. Sweatpants are the perfect ending to a long day at work, and ice cream is good for the soul. Everyone should indulge!"
Jennifer Steere, Cedar Falls
"Procrastination. It's so much more fun than actually doing something."
Jenny Bowser, Waterloo
"Shoes and handbags because it's about the only thing I can go in and I'm the same size everywhere. Handbags - you don't have to try them on.
And Oreos and peanut butter. It's the best of both comfort junk foods."
Helen Smith, Waterloo
"Reading books at the library. If you're home, the phone's always ringing."
Loras Herrig, Bellevue
"My relaxation is watching my kids play sports. It's relaxing for me because there's no stress whatsoever. For those minutes I'm totally caught up in what my daughter's doing when she's playing volleyball and I don't have to think about anything except watching her play."
