Q. In the July 3 Courier it talks about open enrollment applications available for Waterloo students. Waterloo just had to close a school. Why don't they stop letting students open enroll so they don't have to close more schools?
A. Longfellow was closed due to declining enrollment that, although influenced by a number of factors, was primarily due to fewer students residing in the district, said Waterloo Community Schools spokeswoman Sharon Miller. Open enrollment is a state program and is mandatory for all Iowa districts, but Waterloo and several other districts are able to limit open enrollment to protect the diversity of the districts. Miller said the district's net open enrollment loss (considering both open enrollments out of and into the district) was about 60 fewer last year than at its peak in the 2000-2001 school year.
