WAVERLY - Two portable units, intended to alleviate crowded classrooms at a Waverly elementary, sit vacant.
Washington Irving Elementary filled with floodwater in June. Administrators moved those students to a temporary location. But the portable units, large enough to house two large classrooms or four smaller classrooms, sit at the flood-damaged school unused.
At a Monday night meeting, administrators and members of the Waverly-Shell Rock School Board will discuss whether to move and use the units at other elementary schools in town.
"It would provide more classroom space that would ultimately help us balance attendance in individual classrooms," Superintendent Jere Vyverberg said. "They are brand new. Sitting there unused."
The school district may consider using the units at West Cedar, Southeast or Carey elementary schools in Waverly, he said. The cost to move the portable units outside of Waverly is prohibitive, Vyverberg said.
Monday night's meeting follows conversations by district principals but is intended to simply generate discussion with board members, Vyverberg said.
"No decision will be made," Vyverberg said.
The school board will meet at 7 p.m. at the administration building at 1415 Fourth Ave. S.W. in Waverly.
