CEDAR FALLS - The University of Northern Iowa's College of Business Administration announced faculty award winners for 2007 at its annual Graduation Celebration, held earlier this year at the Gallagher-Bluedorn Performing Arts Center on the UNI campus.
- The Faculty Award for Teaching was presented to Tim Lindquist, UNI professor of accounting. Lindquist is a past recipient of the University Book & Supply Outstanding Teaching Award and the college's Innovations in Teaching Award. Lindquist has also taught at the University of Colorado-Boulder, Regis College in Denver and Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Mich. This year's award was sponsored by Short's Travel Management.
- Lawrence Jepson Professor in International Economics Ken McCormick was honored for ongoing research as well as his highly-acclaimed 2006 book, "Veblen in Plain English: A Complete Introduction to Thorstein Veblen's Economics." McCormick has been a faculty member at UNI since receiving his Ph.D. in economics - public finance from Iowa State in 1982. As the Jepson Professor, McCormick helps UNI students realize how the U.S. fits into the international environment. He is an instrumental part of the college's exchange program with the Plekhanov Russian Academy of Economics in Moscow.
- Sarah Sorenson, UNI assistant professor of management, was named the University Book & Supply Outstanding Junior Faculty, awarded to non-tenured faculty on a tenure track. Sorenson joined the college in 2005 as an assistant professor of management. She completed her Bachelor of Science degree in psychology and her Master of Science degree in organizational psychology from the University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh, and her Ph.D. in human resources and industrial relations from the University of Minnesota. Her teaching and research interests include organizational behavior, organizational trust, cross-cultural studies, burnout and unemployment. Sorenson explored these topics recently in collaboration with faculty at Renmin University in China, studying the effects of burnout on middle-school teachers in China.
- The Outstanding Contribution to Business and Community Award went to Michael Spencer, UNI professor of management. Spencer was honored for teaching at the Executive Development Center. Spencer received his Bachelor of Science degree in economics from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale, his Master of Business Administration degree from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, a Master of Arts in Economics degree from UNI and his Ph.D. in business administration from the University of Georgia.
- Heidi Noonan-Day, UNI instructor in management, is the recipient of this year's Students' Choice Award. Each year, students cast online votes to select their outstanding teacher. Noonan-Day received her Bachelor of Arts degree in political science in 1988 and her Juris Doctorate in 1992 from the University of Iowa. This year's award was sponsored by Miller Associates.
- A. Gerald Smith, UNI professor of accounting, was the winner of the Faculty Service Award for his leadership role as chairman of the Scholarship Committee.
