Hawks lead Midlands wrestling
EVANSTON, Ill. — With seven wrestlers remaining in the championship bracket, top-ranked Iowa leads after one day at the 46th Midlands Championships at Northwestern University.

However, 125-pound starter Charlie Falck forfeited his quarterfinal match to Clarion’s Jay Ivanco in the quarterfinals after tweaking a knee.

Semifinalists for Iowa are Daniel Dennis at 133, Alex Tsirtsis at 141, Brent Metcalf at 149, Ryan Morningstar at 165, Jay Borschel at 174, Phil Keddy at 184 and Dan Erekson at heavyweight.

In all, the Hawkeyes have all 10 wrestlers alive for the round of 12.

Iowa State is second in the team standings, 10 1/2 points behind the Hawkeyes’ 93 points.

The Cyclones have six semifinalists — Tyler Clark at 125, Nick Fanthorpe at 133, Dalton Jenson (wrestling unnattached) at 141, Cyler Sanderson at 157, Jon Reader at 165 and Jake Varner at 197.

Varner recorded three pins while reaching the semifinals, wrestling less than seven minutes in the process.

Only Clarke, Fanthorpe, Sanderson, Reader and Varner, of the six semifinalists, count toward ISU’s point total.

“We wrestled pretty well overall,”  Iowa State head coach Cael Sanderson said. “We made some mistakes along the way but we are still within striking distance of first place. We just have to come out and wrestle aggressively and smart tomorrow.”

Northern Iowa has five wrestlers left in the round of 12, but none in the championship bracket.

Top-seeded Moza Fay was upset by Wisconsin freshman Andrew Howe, 14-8, in the quarterfinals.

It was Fay’s first loss of the season. He had won three matches Monday prior to the loss.

Charlie Ettelson at 149, Tyson Reiner at 157, Andrew Anderson at 197 and Christian Brantley at heavyweight all remain alive to earn a spot on the podium.

One of Reiner’s victories was a 6-5 decision over seventh-seeded Hadley Harrison of  Clarion.

Etttelson lost to defending national champion Metcalf, 21-9, in the quarterfinals, while Reiner dropped a 10-2 decision to Sanderson in the quarters. Both Anderson and Brantley rebounded from early losses to win twice in the consolation bracket to reach the round of 12.

Both, however, have tough assignments. Anderson, seeded fifth, will face sixth-seeded Trevor Stewart of Central Michigan, while Brantley faces Wisconsin’s Kyle Massey. Massey pinned Brantley in a dual meet earlier this month.

Action gets under way today at noon. The championship finals will be shown live on the Big Ten Network at 7 p.m.
