Wartburg balance rules day

MONMOUTH Ill. --- Divine intervention seemed to make an appearance late Saturday afternoon at Zorn Memorial Stadium ... "They were a first down away from being able to just take a knee," Wartburg coach Rick Willis said of his Wartburg football team's foe.
But make no mistake. The Knights, who upended No. 14 Monmouth, 30-28, displayed ample amounts of grit on this day, too.
Monmouth entered the day among the nation's leaders in scoring at 48.5 points per game. Employing a no-huddle offense that often features five-receiver sets, the Fighting Scots possessed a quarterback, Alex Tanney, who had thrown for 48 touchdowns.
But Wartburg (10-2) proved that its offense can sting with ferocity, as well.
The Knights rang up 23 first downs, 276 passing yards, and 158 yards on the ground. Quarterback Nick Yordi accounted for the aerial yardage, while junior tailback Alex Boom registered 96 yards and two scores on the ground.
"We've got a lot of playmakers on offense," shrugged Yordi, referring to teammates like wideout Justin Vetter, who had 11 receptions for 148 yards.
Monmouth coach Steve Bell was none too happy afterward as reporters peppered him with questions about why he opted to go for it on fourth-and-11 late instead of kicking a medium-length field goal. Regardless of his gloomy mood, Bell made sure to tip his cap to the Knights and especially lauded the Iowa Conference champs' quickness.
"What impressed me most was just the speed with which they play the game," Bell said of the Knights, who have won four consecutive road games. "And they have that quick-strike capability."
QUICK-HITTERS: Wartburg's players enjoyed a celebration for the ages after the final horn Saturday, bounding as one near midfield. "There was a lot of emotion going on," said Vetter, a Nashua-Plainfield grad. ... The Knights have now beaten Monmouth in three straight seasons. ... West Union native Jason Lansing now leads Wartburg with 116 total tackles. The defensive back produced a game-high 15 stops Saturday. ... Before Saturday, Monmouth had only surrendered three touchdowns or more on two occasions this season.
