Today in the Cedar Valley:

--- Public ice skating is open at Young Arena, 125 Commercial St., from 10 to 11:30 a.m. and 4 to 5:30 p.m. Admission is $3 with a $3 skate rental fee.

--- There is a book discussion group meeting at 10 a.m. at the Cedar Falls Public Library, 425 Main St. The book to be discussed is "The Appeal" by John Grisham.

--- The UNI women's basketball team will take on Western Illinois at 5:30 p.m. at the McLeod Center. For tickets, call 273-4849 or go to www.unipanthers.com

--- The UNI men's basketball team will take on Chicago State at 8:05 p.m. at the McLeod Center. For tickets, call 273-4849 or go to www.unipanthers.com.

--- The Cedar Valley Historical Society will feature a history of John Deere and Rath Packing Co. and hos the companies affected farmers at 7 p.m.at the Grout Museum. Admission is $3 for adults and $2 for children.

-- There will be a classical music concert at the Hearst Center for the Arts in Cedar Falls at 6 p.m.
