Kehoe hearing probably will be canceled
By Courier Staff
INDEPENDENCE --- A hearing next week for a Coralville woman accused of killing her 2-year-old son and injuring another son likely will be canceled.

Michelle Kehoe is charged with first-degree murder, attempted murder and child endangerment resulting in serious injury. Kehoe is accused of taping her sons' eyes closed and cutting their necks with a knife near a remote pond outside of Littleton on Oct. 26. Two-year-old Seth died. Sean, her 7-year-old, is recovering from his wounds.

Kehoe was arrested Saturday and transported to the Buchanan County Jail after she was released from the University of Iowa Hospitals.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Nov. 25. The hearing is used by judges to determine if there enough evidence to present formal charges against a defendant. The hearing will be cancelled if prosecutors file written trial information, which includes the same evidence, for the judge, said County Attorney Allan Vander Hart said.

Vander Hart said he plans on filing trial information soon.

Kehoe is being held on a $2.5 million bond. No formal trial date has been scheduled.

" I was reading a story on kgan.com about how the Kehoe's are coping. I was struck with disbelief that her huband was visiting her in the hospital, let alone taking Sean up to see her. I mean come on, how hard is that on the child to have to go visit the women that did this to him. I hope he can grow from this and get through this. I know I can never feel compassion towards this lady. But, I do feel for her to an extent. The guilt she must feel about what happened and that she choose to put herself first before the kids. I pray for everyone involved with this case and I hope nothing but good things come to Sean and his father in the future. They have been through enough. "

" Insanity...please...this woman knew what she was doing and it was all premeditated from buying the duct tape to making a false report. We need to stop treating white women as privileged members of society. She's a killer for crying out loud. That goes for the mother of missing toddler Caylee Anthony also. Why does there even need to be an investigation in either of theses cases? "

" crimstudent......why do you feel the need to say "white women"? We all know that she is white and we all know that she did this to her boys. I wasn't aware that we treated "white women" as privileged members of society. It never ceases to amaze me how people just feel the need to mention the race card on EVERYTHING!! "

Thank you I was thinking of a response and I don't know if I could of said any better. Sounds like crimstudent doesn't like the "WHITE WOMEN" of society. But, please, this isn't about race or right from wrong. We all know she did this to her children. And that she is white, who cares. I only care about justice for the children and family members involved. My prays are with the family. "

" myvoicematterstome...sorry to inform you, but race still does seem to matter with most things in our society. How so? The very fact that you commented on it demonstrates it. Remember that stuff about casting the first stone? ;) "

For the record I am a white male, I bet you never entertained that thought of me being just that. It has nothing to do with the race card...its about fair, just, and equality. The system is more lenient on white women than any other race/gender combiation. Just look at the statistics in relation to capital punishment and youll see exactly what I mean. look and see whose lives are treated as inferior to others. Black offender/white victim(especially white women)= life in prison/death penalty...white offender/black victim = significantly lesser time.

So in conclusion "myvoicematters" I would like to say that we dont see the race and unjust issue because we have never been subject to inequality because of one reason "whiteness" Oh that is unless you are a poor white "

" So crimstudent, you are one of those that likes to start trouble I see. Very nice of you. I don't care if you are black/white/orange/red/purple. The fact that you would even bring that issue up is totally uncalled for. I don't think this woman will be treated any differently then Susan Smith or anybody else that has killed their child. By the way, Caylee's mother has been charged with murder as has Michelle Kehoe. Unless or until you get to be on the jury you can't tell what is going to happen to her. "

Stana wrote on Nov 21, 2008 8:01 AM:

" Well I agree with crimstudent, One can't avoid the reality of the world. Also generally People who commit crimes against children are not punished as severly as against adults. The courts seem to value a childs life less. Amazing to me. I think they should be valued more

What is that thing in her nose? "

MYSTICAL wrote on Nov 21, 2008 9:38 AM:

" stana: it's a feeding tube, they went to great links to save this women's life while she was in the hospital. I don't know if my background would of failed me. I could of not been a nurse or doctor performing healthcare on this women and have that much compassion to do the right thing. I know it's our jobs and it's wrong of me to say. But, her attempt on her life and what she did to the boys is awful. If she was that unhappy she should of just took her own life or simply walked away. "
