Hawks hold off UTSA, 73-67

IOWA CITY — Forget the 57-percent shooting, ignore the 20 of 22 touch at the free-throw line and ever-so-briefly look beyond the difficulties Iowa had dealing with a press Monday night.
Coach Todd Lickliter found something else to savor after the Hawkeyes rejected an upset bid by Texas-San Antonio, improving to 2-0 with a 73-67 win at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
"We’re down a couple of points, really struggling, but there’s no panic. There was a resolve to get things done, to find a way, and that’s what we can take from this game," Lickliter said.
"When things got tough, everything was focused on the right things. As a young team makes progress, sometimes struggling can be a helpful thing."
The Roadrunners forced the Hawkeyes to cope, turning 19 turnovers into 27 points as Iowa struggled to deal with the 2-2-1 press Texas-San Antonio utilized to rally from a 14-point second-half deficit.
"We haven’t spent a lot of practice time on the 2-2-1 — that’s my fault — but as you go through preparations for the season you have to prioritize and our focus has been on defense," Lickliter said. "We have work to do, but we found a way. That’s important."
Iowa found its way because of the steady touch of Jermain Davis at the foul line and big baskets by two freshman down the stretch.
Davis scored all 10 of his points at the line in the game’s final 7 minutes, 9 seconds, shortly after a 3-pointer by Joey Shank capped off a 16-4 run by Texas-San Antonio (0-2) and left the Hawkeyes in a 57-54 hole.
