Farley: Swift decision wanted

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. --- A chance exists that the fate of two suspended University of Northern Iowa football players could be decided Monday, said head coach Mark Farley.
Wide receivers Johnny Gray and Victor Williams were arrested Friday and charged with possession of marijuana before the Panthers left for Saturday's game at Indiana State. Farley suspended Gray and Williams, and they did not make the trip here.
Following UNI's 28-0 victory over the Sycamores at Memorial Stadium, Farley hoped to gather more information on the arrests. But he didn't want to wait too long to decide if Gray and Williams would remain on the team in any capacity.
"I haven't studied that and really looked into it," said Farley when asked if he had learned more details about the arrests. "When we talked (Friday) night, that's where we left it.
"No question, this will be approached. I would hope a decision would be made on Monday, because I'm not gonna hang around on this. We've got a decision to make like we make decisions in the game and live with the decisions we make."
Senior running back Corey Lewis extended some sympathy toward his suspended teammates, but he also placed responsibility squarely on their shoulders.
"I mean, my heart goes out to them," said Lewis. "People make mistakes. Nobody's perfect. Those are two very good guys. I just feel for them to be put in that situation. But they did it to themselves. I still love them to death, though."
UNI linebacker De'Veon Harris and safety Darrell Lloyd did play Saturday. They did not fly to Terre Haute with the team after being questioned by authorities in connection with the Williams and Gray situation, but they did participate.
Harris declined comment on his teammates, but he did feel a bit distracted early.
"At first, it was kind of hard to focus," said Harris. "But you've gotta play a game. So I had to get it out of my mind and focus on what I had to do."
ALL-WEATHER QB � Quarterback Pat Grace did not play Saturday. According to Farley, Grace was "nicked up" in the victory over Missouri State. So Zach Davis drew his third start of 2008 and helped the Panthers lock up a share of the Missouri Valley Football Conference title.
Grinning, Farley said Davis was in a comfort zone during the poor weather conditions.
"Zach Davis is our outdoor quarterback, and Pat Grace is our indoor quarterback," said the UNI coach.
"We didn't feel Pat came around well enough after last week to put him into this wind and be productive enough. Zach gives us enough confidence to put him in a game like this, knowing we could keep going in the direction we wanted to keep going in."
Davis threw just 11 passes and completed six for 111 yards and a touchdown. His 52-yarder to wide receiver Jared Herring led to UNI's final touchdown
ODDS AND ENDS � With his second-half pass interception Saturday, linebacker Jamar Thompson moved into a tie with Terrell McMoore for the team lead at four. ... Indiana State linebacker Quinton Scott, the Missouri Valley Football Conference's top tackler in 2008 was suspended before the UNI game for undisclosed reasons.
