American socialism won't work
By DENNIS CLAYSON
If there is anything to be learned in this election cycle it is that many Americans, perhaps the majority, want the government to take care of them. They not only tolerate a Nanny State, they want a Nanny State.

I find this development troubling.

Nannies are employed to care for children. Children are not expected to act, think or react to logic the same as adults. Even in minor emergencies, they are expected to run to their nanny for protection.

Where the nanny gets her resources, or her information, is of no concern to the child as long as she is taken care of and protected from anything in the world that may be threatening, either real or imaginary.

One of the problems with a Nanny State is that the state and the children are made up of the same people. If the citizens are children, then their representatives in government also are children, and having the most important government on the planet being controlled and run by children is not a comforting thought.

Playrooms ruled by children may appear idyllic at times, but more often than not, they can degenerate into the nightmare portrayed in "The Lord of the Flies."

There is another problem. Not everyone is a child, and the human sharks are attracted to naïve children with illogical beliefs of freedom and economics like fresh blood in the water.

Governments that promise you everything are lying to you. If they obtain the power to approximate this ability, they have become socialistic and tyrannical.

Socialistic governments do not produce workers' paradises, or places where everyone is educated and has "free" health care. These exist only in the lies these states call demographics. They produce festering hell holes that impoverish entire nations and drive the human spirit into a nihilistic sickness that even drugs, alcohol and rampant sex can't alleviate.

Wealth is not "spread around." Poverty is, while the powerful get fabulously wealthy.

This is not hypothetical. It has all been tried. Socialism does not work as advertised. It has been implemented by Lenin, Stalin, Khrushchev, Mao, Zhou Enlai, and Kim Jong-Il, who the CIA estimates has salted away $5 billion while his people starve.

If these are not enough, we could add Tito, Nasser and the Pol Pot. If you think socialism fails because of some fluke of culture, we could add Castro and Hugo Chavez, or even African socialism as showcased by Julius Nyerere, who may have been one of the more principled leaders in a long line of body bag tyrants who promised social Edens and delivered death, poverty, and famine.

If you don't want free markets, but don't want communism, then you could call for a third way. That also has been done and gave the world Mussolini and Hitler.

History has even done experiments with this. How about a controlled experiment in which we take a country with the same climate, culture, language, and history and split it down the middle? We will establish socialism on one side and relative free markets on the other, and then we will wait fifty years to see what happens.

It has been done. Germany, once the most advanced country in the world, was split down the middle into East and West Germany and with what result? Korea, a land of peasants, was split down the middle. The free market side is a prosperous modern nation. The socialist half is a hellhole with starving people watched night and day for the least sign of rebellion.

But the dreams of economic illiterates and those into Santa Claus economics don't die easily, especially when wedded to liberal arrogance.

You see, some "modern" person or group can make socialism work because the rest just didn't do it right, or they weren't as smart.

The idea that Obama or some government bureaucrats are more intelligent than all the men I listed earlier is laughable. The idea that a modern American has more stomach for the struggle, or more will to wade through blood up to his knees to impose a socialist vision on the unwilling, is so absurd as to be contemptible.

American socialism will be no improvement on the other varieties. If anything it will be worse because we will have soft-handed children doing men's work.

But like all pampered children, we don't want to hear this; we just want to be taken care of.

" Enough with the socialism Mr. Clayson. You really don't understand Americans do you? Just more fear mongering gibberish, plus the same old examples of dictators and communists regimes that have absolutely NOTHING to do with what is going on in this country.

Pathetic, and beneath someone who has been given an important forum like a weekly column in a newspaper.

It is a waste time to pick apart the points Mr. Clayson attempts to make. It is simply easier and just as accurate to say they are all wrong.

I have said this before, I really don't think Mr. Clayson believes most of what he writes in these columns, that or he is truly unqualified to teach at a major state university. "

" What a sad last gasp attempt to swing a couple Courier readers. This socialism meme is THE definition of a straw man argument. An attempted return to prosperity must mean socialism, y'all!
Socialism is not bringing spending power back to the middle class. Nor is it reigning in corporate influence over government and creating more affordable health care like nearly every other developed country in the world.
If socialism is building more opportunities for American citizens to go to school and seniors to afford necessary drugs than so is taking my tax dollars and starting botched foreign wars or maintaining expensive pet projects like the GOP has done so prolifically the past 8 years.
This is just another pathetic conservative movement war on something and for one of the first times I can remember, the public isn't buying it wholesale.
Add this to the list of:
Jim Crow laws, McCarthyism, War On Drugs, war on illegal immigrants, war on flippin' rock music (started by a Dem I know but still with a bible belt neocon philosophy), war on all Muslims, witch hunts to make everyone a sex offender (see the 18 year old in Georgia who went to prison for sexual contact with a 17 year old), war against gays, war against science, war against everything we conservatives don't agree with because we couldn't get dates in high school.
All of the above are borne of neocon "principles".
The ends justifies the means.
Give tax cuts to the people who need them the least and throw more citizens in prison. What a wonderful philosophy.
Were we a socialist country in the mid 90's, when we were enjoying one of our strongest economies in U.S. history? So why the narrative now? Has the Republican way worked the past 1.5 decades? You know, given that they were in power all that time and here we sit with a record number of foreclosures and stagnated living wages. This is just another pathetic, sorry smear attempt by the GOP to try to cling to that last bit of power.

The only freedom the cowardly, chickenhawk neocon comprehends is economic freedom.

It's just straight up scorched Earth policy. Even though the our banking system and housing market are in dire straits, let's just keep trying to rally people to dig a bigger hole. In our narrow minded, neoconservative way.

Pathetic. (Blanking) pathetic. "

The Democrats are made up of those that would die without government and their free food stamps and welfare and the housing projects. liberals demand socialism because they dont have the inclination to do it themselves, to take responsibility for their kids, to blame those in better economic conditions then themselves. GET TO WORK! do something. stop whining about your lot in life.

CF thinkg bush created fannie failings. not so. bush demanded more regulation in 2003 when barney frank was out spewing how great fannie was and that barney would never bail him out. i disagree completely with the liberal policy of bailing out the banking industry. i also think bush failed in supporting it. but barney, pelosi, dodd and the rest of the libs own congress. in reality they did not need one republican vote, but of course they needed them all!

socialism is evil, it does not work and it will fail if barack hussein obama has his way.

what will happen? BHO will try to negotiate with terrorists. he likes the hamas, they like him(they know how easy it will be to attack us.) al qaeda will be allowed to regroup and strengthen. Biden himself promises we will be attacked again BECAUSE barack hussein obama is not ready. Biden knows BHo has no idea how to handle these yahoos, and biden hopes he will be given the keys.

ALso, BHO will continue to destroy our economy with massive tax raises. he will allow bush tax cuts to expire in 1 yr, and will not give the middel class more relief. He WILL raise taxes on every wage earner in this country. guaranteed. when has a liberal every promised something in an election and then not flipped?

what else? barack hussein obama will continue to lower our values on life and liberty. he will allow more abortion rights. he will try to rewrite our constitution to allow gays to have gay kids, to allow murderers and rapists more rights then their victims. he will allow the do-nothings the ability to earn more money at the cost to society.

why would bho hire the fools who ran fannie into the ground? why would BHO hang out with terrorists. on 09-11 ayers said he was sorry he didnt bomb more in the US! shameful. Why didnt BHO take the agreed upon campaign financing? why wont BHO disclose who is large anonymous donars are? (hamas) why would BHO allow his own brother and aunt to live in squaler when he promises to help everyone else?

Why would barack hussein obama stay in a racist church for 20+ years. listening to racists threats from his good friend and rev. wright. why would BHO pay him 20k to do it?

Rezko, Acorn, socialist party in the 90's...Way to many questions about the golden child for America.

Socialism and barack hussein obama are not right for america. not now, not ever.

cross1242 wrote on Nov 2, 2008 11:37 AM:

" This week, Prof. Clayson supposedly tells us why Socialism is bad for us. He then spends perfectly good newsprint and ink to tell us that Communism and dictators are really, really bad for anybody. (I just wish that someone at the Courier would tell Prof. Clayson that unless he can at least make his diatribes internally consistent, he won’t get published anymore.)

Of course, the topic comes up because of the impending victory of Barack Obama at the polls which those on the hard right, following McCain’s lead, tell us is going to bring us socialism.

It’s not, of course, but Prof. Clayson never lets facts stand in the way of more dyspeptic ramblings.

As I have pointed out here. ad nauseam, the following list of equivalences is NOT true:

Communism = socialism = progressivism = liberalism = Democratic policy = Authoritarianism = Fascism = any other idea that Prof. Clayson doesn’t like

Unfortunately, some people on this website have publicly stated that they agree with that equivalence list. To that list might be added “= any other new idea that seems vaguely threatening just because it’s new.” For them, I need to initially respond, “Lighten up. The rest of your fellow Americans aren’t out to get you. And, just maybe, you will eventually have to admit, albeit perhaps begrudgingly, that the result will be better for all of us as well as you personally.”

I’d like to tackle a few of the illogical arguments that Prof. Clayson peddles. First, he makes the obligatory reference to the “nanny state” and how it’s going to corrupt us all. It needs to be observed that he mentions the “nanny state” four times in about as many paragraphs. He apparently believes that repeating pejorative labels makes them true.

The fact is that “nanny state” is a pejorative label and nothing more. Prof. Clayson seems that we’re all as free as those who ventured into the frontier two hundred years ago. They were independent of all influences of others only because they were alone. And, as soon as there were others, they bound themselves into a society and established a government.

The ultimate example is that of when the Pilgrims arrived off Massachusetts in the Mayflower. Before anyone set a foot ashore they signed the Mayflower Compact to “covenant and combine ourselves together into a civil Body Politick.”

My point is that unlike Prof. Clayson’s claim that we’re all better off if we stand alone, our history demonstrates conclusively that in the real world people know they are better off if they combine together for mutual interests. Humans aren’t loners as Prof. Clayson urges. We are social beings. The recognition of that fact is best stated by John Dunne in his “Meditation XVII” that says:

“No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent, a part of the main. If a clod be washed away by the sea, Europe is the less, as well as if promontory were, as well as if a manor of thy friend's or of thine own were. Any man's death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.”

Already, we live in a society where our government has ensured that all kinds of services are collectively available to everyone. Today, anyone wanting to be “his own man” must sleep in a house without electricity, gas, or phone. He may not venture out on the roads built for our common use. He must reject the common defense. He must eschew all inspection of our food and facilities to make sure they are safe. He must assume that no one will care for him when he is old or disabled.

The term “nanny state” is balderdash. Saying that he lives in a “firefighter state” is more accurate. He may become a hermit in his house. And other people will pretty much leave him alone. However, if his house starts to burn down, the society will send fire fighters to put out the fire and to make sure he is all right. And the firefighters will come even if he protests that he’d rather do it all alone. In that, the society that sent the firefighters is smarter than the hermit who wants to always go it alone.

So, now we are going to readjust where the sphere of going it alone and working in common with others is going to be readjusted. We’ve found that our health care doesn’t work real well when we’re on our own to figure out how to pay for it. So, we’re going to work out a system where no one goes without good health care and we somehow pay for in common. It’s but a minor change in a 225-year long trail of adjustments between the private and the common. Get used to it.

There are a few other points of error in Prof. Clayson’s column that I’d like to give brief responses to.

He says, “Socialism does not work as advertised. It has been implemented by Lenin, Stalin, Khrushchev, Mao, Zhou Enlai, and Kim Jong-Il.” But, they were all implementing vicious forms of Communism and not mere Socialism. No matter what Prof. Clayson says, they are not the same. Sen. Joe McCarthy thought they were the same too, but that claim is just WRONG, WRONG, WRONG.

To top it, he adds, “If you don't want free markets, but don't want communism, then you could call for a third way. That also has been done and gave the world Mussolini and Hitler.”

“Third way?”

The alternative between Socialism and Democracy is Fascism?

That claim is just too dumb to require rebuttal.

Next, he says, “Germany, once the most advanced country in the world, was split down the middle into East and West Germany and with what result? Korea, a land of peasants, was split down the middle. The free market side is a prosperous modern nation. The socialist half is a hellhole with starving people watched night and day for the least sign of rebellion.”

Again, Prof. Clayson proposes a false dichotomy. West Germany and South Korea are not and never have been the pinnacles of free-market economies. And right next door to Germany are about all the other countries of Europe that mix some free-market capitalism with common action under the respective states.

I suppose that we’d all better get used to Prof. Clayson’s hostility to the future under an Obama Administration. Rather than admit that he’s just been beaten and then being quiet, Prof. Clayson will protest the results no matter how successful all the rest of humanity thinks the changes under Obama turn out to be. To all of them, Prof. Clayson will note that his record is uniform. Through success after success, Prof. Clayson will have opposed them all. "

It is, of course, socialism of a sort when failure in the financial industry is public business.

why are you libs out there right now writing a bill that will take our 401ks and give us back 3& interest? why are you out on your death beds with teddie k and writing a socialist health plan system. say it isnt so ism?

socialism will not help your welfare recipients on the left. it will only bring the middle down to that level.

no bama is talking. noone notices.

"Let me sort of describe my overall policy.

What I've said is that we would put a cap and trade system in place that is as aggressive, if not more aggressive, than anybody else's out there.

I was the first to call for a 100% auction on the cap and trade system, which means that every unit of carbon or greenhouse gases emitted would be charged to the polluter. That will create a market in which whatever technologies are out there that are being presented, whatever power plants that are being built, that they would have to meet the rigors of that market and the ratcheted down caps that are being placed, imposed every year.

So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can; it's just that it will bankrupt them because they're going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that's being emitted.

That will also generate billions of dollars that we can invest in solar, wind, biodiesel and other alternative energy approaches.

The only thing I've said with respect to coal, I haven't been some coal booster. What I have said is that for us to take coal off the table as a ideological matter as opposed to saying if technology allows us to use coal in a clean way, we should pursue it.

So if somebody wants to build a coal-powered plant, they can.

It's just that it will bankrupt them."

and this

"The problem is not technical, uh, and the problem is not mastery of the legislative intricacies of Washington. The problem is, uh, can you get the American people to say, “This is really important,” and force their representatives to do the right thing? That requires mobilizing a citizenry. That requires them understanding what is at stake. Uh, and climate change is a great example.
You know, when I was asked earlier about the issue of coal, uh, you know — Under my plan of a cap and trade system, electricity rates would necessarily skyrocket. Even regardless of what I say about whether coal is good or bad. Because I’m capping greenhouse gases, coal power plants, you know, natural gas, you name it — whatever the plants were, whatever the industry was, uh, they would have to retrofit their operations. That will cost money. They will pass that money on to consumers.
They — you — you can already see what the arguments will be during the general election. People will say, “Ah, Obama and Al Gore, these folks, they’re going to destroy the economy, this is going to cost us eight trillion dollars,” or whatever their number is. Um, if you can’t persuade the American people that yes, there is going to be some increase in electricity rates on the front end, but that over the long term, because of combinations of more efficient energy usage, changing lightbulbs and more efficient appliance, but also technology improving how we can produce clean energy, the economy would benefit.
If we can’t make that argument persuasively enough, you — you, uh, can be Lyndon Johnson, you can be the master of Washington. You’re not going to get that done.
"

no new taxes. but massive increase in energy costs. bankrupting coal business.

• Reality. Obama voted to allow the prosecution of people who use a firearm for self-defense in their frickin’ homes. (Illinois Senate, S.B. 2165, vote 20. 3/25/04)
• Reality. Obama supported increasing taxes on firearms and ammunition by 500%. That means the $500 Ruger you want to buy that currently has an excise tax of $55 would skyrocket to $330 tax. (Chicago Defender, 12/13/99). But that shouldn’t bug you, Obama backers, because you’re all about “spreading the wealth,” aren’t you?
• Reality. Obama voted to allow reckless lawsuits designed to bankrupt the firearms industry. (United States Senate, S. 397, vote 219, 7/29/05).
• Reality. Obama wants to reimpose the failed and discredited Clinton Gun Ban. (Illinois State Debate #3: Barack Obama vs. Alan Keyes, 10/21/04).
• Reality. Obama endorsed a ban on all handguns. (Independent voters of Illinois/Independent precinct organization general candidate questionnaire, 9/9/96; Politico, 3/31/08).
• Reality. Obama opposes the Right to Carry laws. (Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, 4/02/08; Chicago Tribune, 9/15/04).
• Reality. Obama voted to ban almost all rifle ammunition commonly used for hunting and sport shooting. (United States Senate, S.397, 7/29/05).
• Reality. Obama supports gun owner licensing and gun registration. (“Fact Check: No News In Obama’s Consistent Record.” Obama campaign website, 12/11/07).
• Reality. Obama voted to limit gun purchases to one per month. (Illinois state senate, H.B. 2579, vote 34, 5/16/03).
• Reality. Obama opposes four of the five Supreme Court justices who affirmed an individual right to keep and bear arms. (United States Senate vote 245, 9/29/2005 and vote 2, 1/31/2006 and Saddleback Forum, 8/16/2008).
• Reality. Obama voted for an Illinois State Senate bill to ban and confiscate “assault weapons,” but the bill was so poorly crafted, it would have also banned most semi-auto and single and double barrel shotguns commonly used by sportsmen. (Illinois Senate Judiciary Committee, 3/13/2003).
• Reality. Obama has endorsed a complete ban on handgun ownership. (Independent Voters of Illinois/Independent Precinct Organization general candidate questionnaire, 9/9/1996. The responses on this survey were described in “Obama had greater role on liberal survey,” Politico, 3/31/2008). "

"Who pays the business tax anyway? We do! You can’t tax business. Business doesn’t pay taxes. It collects taxes. And if they can’t be passed on to the customer in the price of the product as a cost of operation, business goes out of business. Now what they’re going to do is make it easier for demagogic politicians–and you’ve got plenty of them in the state legislature–to say to the people, look, we need money for this worthwhile project but we’re not going to tax you, we’re going to tax business, now that we can do it by a one vote margin. So they’ll tax business and the price of the product will go up and the people will blame the storekeeper for the rise in the price of the product, not recognizing that all he’s doing is passing on to them a hidden sales tax.
If people need any more concrete explanation of this, start with the staff of life, a loaf of bread. The simplest thing; the poorest man must have it. Well, there are 151 taxes now in the price of a loaf of bread–it accounts for more than half the of a loaf of bread. It begins with the first tax, on the farmer that raised the wheat. Any simpleton can understand that if that farmer cannot get enough money for his wheat, to pay the property tax on his farm, he can’t be a farmer. He loses his farm. And so it is with the fellow who pays a driver’s license and a gasoline tax to drive the truckload of wheat to the mill, the miller who has to pay everything from social security tax, business license, everything else. He has to make his living over and above those costs. So they all wind up in that loaf of bread. Now an egg isn’t far behind and nobody had to make that. There’s a hundred taxes in an egg by the time it gets to market and you know the chicken didn’t put them there!" "

Excuse me, but there was a war on. And Lee and his soldiers were not exactly unarmed.

He said, "The civil war was not fought over slavery but States rights."

Two things wrong there. It started over preservation of the union. When Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, it was turned into a war against slavery.

And, you do remember that the South lost. That ended any possible claim that the United States is a voluntary association.

He said, "These churches also need to be taxed and force to pay a share."

There is a teeny-weeny Constitutional problem with that. The power to tax is the "power to destroy." And, the Bill of Rights says that the government can't "destroy" a church.

He also said, "The same freedoms we had in 1800 I want today."

In 1800 you had the freedom to be a hermit it you wanted. Now, we're living cheek by jowl and you need to learn how to live in a close-knit society.

BTW, do you really mean all that stuff or are you just trying to get a rise out of people?

It takes a lot of something to bet against someone who is probably one of the smartest people to be president...." What's smart got to do with it? Carter supposedly was a genius. As I said before, and no one replied, how smart is it to threaten raisning capital gains taxes when the stock market is in the dumps? So either he does something idiotic, or backs out of his pledge. And we can add that to his list of waffles. Be impressed with his smartness all you want. I think accomplishments and results count for more. And he said his first move would be to push some freedom of choice act. Why? Don't we have more serious issues? Is the abortion lobby broke now, after kicking in to the democrat coffers? Then there's Biden. Real genius there. Where was Biden the last two weeks of the campaign? "

WAVERLY..to call McCain a pathetic loser???? That says a lot about your character. The man is far from that. To even make that comment demonstrates your narrow-mindedness and total lack of what a real patriot is. Let's just pray that President Elect Obama doesn't have your same opinions. "

" xdfred, at least we have a few of us on here that know how the economy works. The Democrats just keep hoping there will be a big money-tree out there somewhere. Maybe it will grow on the grounds of companies that want to make less money in the future.
These people just don't get it, Fred. Unfortunately, we'll all have to suffer the consequences of their votes and hope/pray that Obama gets SOMEBODY to help him figure out that his campaign promises would STAB this weakened economy. He'll then have to just toss his Share The Wealth Plan under the bus with Ayers, Wright, Rezko, and the rest of his bad choices. "

Yes Newswatcher, we all suffer together from the consequences of our own votes and the votes of the 59,245,671 who voted on the winning side in 2004.

And we all end up having a much greater debt to pay, we all suffer when the regulations of our great land of laws are not enforced, and about 95% of us suffer from the greedy grabbers who have gotten richer over the last eight years, until they got caught in America's financial blow-up which has hurt every single one of us.

That is how the economy works and I am sure that you know it since you have watched the news. "

Why do we have the DEA? All driven by church going thugs who want their god in my home. At least we don't kill in the name of Isis or Pan.

"In 1800 you had the freedom to be a hermit it you wanted. Now, we're living cheek by jowl and you need to learn how to live in a close-knit society." You stay close knit-I want nothing to do with your God and the foolish idea I have to care for anyone other than my family. I owe you nothing but you seem to think I do. So why don't you pay my gas bill and do the church thing. Simple

"BTW, do you really mean all that stuff or are you just trying to get a rise out of people?" I mean just what I said. Lincoln was only after the tax money from the south. He was a Socialist. He started a WAR to get it. He didn't care about slaves until then. I can't wait to see the next revolt take place. I live for it. The price of freedom don't come easy. That's not far off. "

Duh...everyone knows John McCain was born in Panama...on a U.S. Naval base that was sovreign territory of the United States, by both parents that were naturalized citizens. Therefore, John McCain IS a naturalized citizen of the United States and that is not even disputed. He had his credentials and was never hiding them. What about Obama? Where are his credentials? Or how about even his college transcripts? He has been hiding A LOT and still leaves way too many questions about him to us Conservatives. What and why is he hiding from all of us? "

Actually, try Eisenhower. Reagan was fiscally irresponsible also - but he did raise taxes when he needed to - despite the myth that he didn't. Overall, Eisenhower was the real conservative though compared to Reagan. "
