Inmates identified in prison attack
ANAMOSA — State prison officials say three staff members at the prison in Anamosa were injured after they were attacked by two inmates, one of whom was from Franklin County in Northeast Iowa.
That inmate, Joshua George, has since been transferred to the Iowa State Penitentiary in Fort Madison.
George is serving a life sentence from Franklin County for first-degree murder, third-degree kidnapping and first-degree robbery for the 1996 beating death of his stepbrother with a sawed-off pool cue. George, 17 at the time, was convicted April 7, 1997. The sentence began on April 28, 1997.
Iowa Department of Corrections spokesman Fred Scaletta says the injuries to the assaulted prison staff members were not life-threatening, and the employees were treated at a hospital and released.
The incident happened Tuesday afternoon. Scaletta said the two inmates involved in the attack were quickly restrained, and the prison was placed on temporary lockdown.
Prison officials said that, following an institution count, inmate Eric Wagenknecht became upset and assaulted a stationed unit security staff person. Upon arrival of two additional security staff, Inmate George became involved with the scuffle and assaulted both responding staff.
Both inmates were quickly restrained and placed in administrative segregation pending investigation.
The three security staff were treated at Jones County Regional Medical Center and released.
Wagenknecht is 31 years old and serving a five-year sentence from Johnson County for willfull injury. The sentence began on March 28, 2007. Wagenknecht was transferred to Anamosa on Aug. 13, 2008.
