WATERLOO/CEDAR FALLS --- Both Waterloo West and Cedar Falls volleyball teams advanced in the first round of Class 4A regional play Monday night.

Waterloo West got off to a slow start but went on to defeat Mason City 19-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-23. West will return to action at 7 p.m. Thursday as it visits crosstown rial and 11th-ranked Waterloo East in the regional semi-finals.

East earned a first-round bye.

Meanwhile, Cedar Falls dropped its first game and then cruised past Cedar Rapids Jefferson 19-25, 25-20, 25-21, 25-19.

The Tigers play Cedar Rapids Kennedy in the next round Wednesday night.
