Teacher suspended over video of students’ Obama chants
By JOE ROBERTSON, McClatchy Newspapers
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A teacher at a Kansas City charter school was suspended Monday after video of his public school students chanting in praise of Barack Obama became a national sensation on YouTube.

In the video, boys from the Urban Community Leadership Academy, wearing T-shirts and camouflage pants, march in formation and shout out how Obama has sparked the middle school students’ aspirations to be architects, lawyers and entrepreneurs.

The video was the subject of the most read and most e-mailed story on Fox News’ Election Headquarters Web page Monday.

The school’s director, Joyce McGautha, said she had been advised by legal counsel to make no more comments about the video while the school investigates.

The video — created in May while Obama and Hillary Clinton were competing for the Democratic nomination, but apparently not posted until recently — brought a wave of complaints on blogs of a public school being much too partisan.

The Urban Community Leadership Academy is a project-based learning school that serves about 300 students in the fifth through ninth grades, mostly high-risk students, McGautha said. Nine out of 10 of its students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Earlier, McGautha told Fox News that she did not condone the video and did not want it disseminated on the Internet. She acknowledged that public school teachers cannot support particular candidates in the classroom.

The teacher, whose identity was not revealed, will get a hearing before the charter school’s board, she told Fox News.

While McGautha could not comment any more on the video, she encouraged anyone who doubts the integrity of the school to visit.

"We invite anyone to come and look around," she said, "and see the type of school we have and sit down and have a conversation with us."

" I read this article about "Teacher suspended over video of students’ Obama chants". And I asked what is all the commotion about.

So, I went to YOUTUBE (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LSvBCBnulLs) and watched the video that was the basis for this action. Now the courier has added it to this page. You have to listen to the words. Don't be confused by the clothing or drill formation.

It was what is called "stepping" which has its origins in the fraternity and sorority systems of the HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities). As a matter of fact the young men identify themselves as Alpha Omega. The largest chapter in Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. is the Alpha Omega Chapter. Maybe their teacher is a member of that chapter.

The video identifies them as "Obama Youth - Junior Fraternity Regiment". Maybe that is what scares some who have no knowledge of life in Black America. Even though they have made several movies about stepping, the line and black fraternity life.

They are chanting about what inspired them and it is usually a very personal chant. There is not one reference to violence or any negative conduct. If young black men exercising their Constitutional Rights threaten someone my suggestion is to grow up.

They spoke of being responsible. They knew more than most registered voters what the health plan contained. If this is what it takes to get our youth to learn then do it. You have to listen to the words. Don't be confused by the clothing or drill.

Of all the presidential candidates of all the parties you have to admit that only one had the background, credentials, accomplishment, track record and offer hope to inspired them positively. Barack Obama is not only the first black to get the nomination for President by a major party but he is also the first Black editor in chief of The Harvard Law Review which is probably the most prestigious law school in the world. He has spent years as a community organizer.

McCain is against Affirmative action and several other initiatives so they would be foolish to say he inspires them. I know this was done before the nomination of McCain and Obama but I'm keep it focused.

What they said was they were inspired by Barack Obama to be a doctor, lawyer, sheriff, engineer, automobile technician, architect, firemen and entrepreneur. That is nothing to be condemned for inspiring our young people to make something of themselves.

All the young men wanted to do was make something of themselves and be a positive part of our society. Not one young man wanted to be a dope addict, dope pusher, alcoholic, pimp, criminal, spouse abuser, baby's daddy, or what is usually portrayed as the future for young black men. We need more inspiration and teaching like this. This is just another way to sure "no child is left behind".

Since when does inspiring our youth to be the best do we punish someone? This is America and we are a pluralist society. I think the administrator should be praising and encouraging this type of influence by a teacher instead of disciplining him or her.

I have to say you people who are in partisan politics leave our young men out of your petty squabbles because they have a future unlike most of you. "

And if the teacher is encouraging these children to be inspired by the accomplishments of Senator Obama, good for him to try to point them in the right direction. What's so sad by our society is when there's an effort for something positive to happen, and I believe that was this instructors intention, so many turn that around into something so horrible. "

I would have no problem with these kids outside of school showing this kind of support for Obama. Just not in school. School is supposed to be an un-biased learning environment. Do you think these kids get the same kind of information on John McCain as they do about Barack Obama? I'd bet they probably know nothing about McCain's policies or background. That's my only issue. and if you want to call me an 'elitist' for supporting a young person's right to express himself then whatever. the first amendment doesn't apply to just adults. in fact, children of this age often appear at political events or have their school project letter read by politicians. engaging children in the political process only helps our nation. i'm sorry they didn't support the white person in the race, but if you were a poverty-stricken african-american child you would not be supporting hillary clinton either.
i guess given this nation's current political climate, being a pragmatic realist makes me a liberal elitist.
i feel really elite six days a week when i'm working second shiftat my metal shop making parts for tractors. every saturday evening when my friends are watching football games and engaging in other social activities and i'm covered in sweat and metal dust waiting for 11pm so i can enjoy a couple of hours of the weekend i think to myself that it sure feels good to be an "elitist"--and to be able to enjoy the privileges my "elitist" status affords. being a member of the elite, shrinking middle class and watching my 401k shrink by about 25% this year and realizing what money i have left in 401k isn't worth as much as it used to be because bush's record deficits have devalued the dollar has brought me great "elitist" pleasure. seeing the administration that has re-distributed my middle class wages to the rich and powerful take more of my hard-earned money to bail out the rich and powerful because of their lack of responsibility makes me proud of my "elitism". if you see me peering down disapprovingly from my grease-stained safety googles please just excuse me as another "elitist" trying to ruin our nation. They will lower wages, they will eliminate jobs, they will raise prices. When Obama takes away tax incentives and raises taxes on the oil companies, thus increasing the shipping costs of the products produced, how do think Deere's will make up that loss? Jobs, and wages are the first place corporations look, I know I have been downsized more then once in my life.
As for the Obama youth video, I'm not surprised this teacher was suspended in today's politically correct enviornment. Making it is fine, but releasing it and making it public was a mistake. Obama is a great role model for young african-american youths, especially when a lot of african american youth's idolize the "gangster rappers" and athletes who in generel glorify womanizing, violence and overall disrespect. See you guys on November 4th. And who knows *wink* if we're lucky, maybe Ayers and Farrakhan will hold the Koran for Barack Hussein Obama when he is sworn in as President of the United States. LOL "

" Yeah unionlabel, I'm sure Adolph inspired lots of disaffected kids to become architects, lawyers and entrepreneurs. You're right on with that comment, NOT. "

As a matter of fact, he did.

In fact, Hitler during his rise to power was considered to be something of a "Messiah" himself by many Germans. By the time many began to figure out how wrong they were, it was too late.

—Obviously, they're not teaching history in the public school system much anymore. "

" Actually, this is kind of a double sided blade.

To the extent that these kids may be inspired to achieve responsible and useful educations and careers, this is a good thing.

If they are inspired to do this by Barack Obama, then good for him.

But there's still something a bit iffy about the whole thing. What it smacks of is political exploitation of kids who probably have a lot more to learn about history and critical thinking. By a teacher, no less.

The ultimate irony, of course, is that these kids may have been inspired to pursue their education and careers only to grow up in a country where achieving their ultimate potential may be considerably limited by the imposition of an ever growing socialist hegemony.

^o^
—And, yes, Hitler inspired German youth to careers as architects and engineers as well as joining the Schutzstaffel. "

" Hmmm, membership in Hitler's youth was compulsory from 1936 on. Hitler did not inspire anyone....he indoctinated them in his "training academies". Anyone who finds a similarity between these "stepping" youth INSPIRED by Obama and Hitler's Youth needs to actually study Nazi Germany. No, nevermind. Remain ignorant and spew your misinformation. No one is really paying attention, anyway. If you are seriously wanting to know about the 1930's Germany I'll be happy to recommend some great books. To try to launch your own smear campaign against Obama based on what you think you know about Nazi Germany, or fascists, or socialism is not doing anything more than drawing out your own comrades to support your idiocy. Uh, huh. Well, I'm old enough that I knew people who were there. Who survived Hitler and his National Socialists.

^o^
...Reading books is fine and dandy, but personally knowing survivors adds a certain dimension that goes a bit beyond reading a book. "
