" Yeah okay, we get i. You're from Cedar Falls. You're from a rich town. You're sheltered from reality. Thanks for clearing that up.

Waterloo is simply a product of social structure. Poor neighborhoods have higher crime rates. All these people who say "just another day in waterloo" are part of the problem. We have to make a change in our society in order to see a change in our neighborhoods.

But then again, I'll probably just get called a liberal or something by someone on here. So why bother right? Jeez.. "

Waterloo Reader wrote on Sep 29, 2008 8:31 AM:

" Hey realityxdose: cf1981 was being sarcastic. cf1981 is a cult member of the ozymaniacs. These blind followers believe that CF is better and that all crime in CF is caused by residents of Waterloo. The cult has attempted to build a wall between Waterloo and CF so that they can control the flow of Waterlooians into the Cedar Falls, "The Land Of OZ." The ozymaniacs are ecstatic that Ozyland is getting their own Target store so they won't have to cross the wall and mingle with the criminals in Waterloo. (End of Sarcasm)

Face it, if you can't see this as a less obvious form of racism you just aren't looking hard enough. "

siloa wrote on Sep 29, 2008 10:12 AM:

" Sadly the only thing that will change the insanity of Waterloo and most other crime anywhere else is PARENTS.
It would also help if we had better laws and punishment for those who continue to break the law. Sadly offneders are treated well, victims are shuned and everyone is afraid because NOTHING SEEMS TO CHANGE. The crime rate goes up, people blame, point fingers. The only people to blame are PARENTS. Raise your child, or children properly and we could change the world. Stop the insanity, hold PARENTS accountable, and sometimes for societies sake we must lock them up and throw away the key.
No race card, dont blame the educational system, there are jobs, open your eyes, the choices the criminal element makes is their choice, ah but someone will blmae all the above, ITS THE PARENTS, and or lack of parenting. "

" Actually, cf1981 if repeating a quote from a waterloo police officer. Everytime there's a shooting in Waterloo, sombody uses this quote. It's totally unoriginal, but then look who it's coming from. "

cfreader wrote on Sep 29, 2008 11:17 AM:

" It never ceases to amaze me that there there are people that continue to somehow justify what is going on in waterloo is ok. I lived in waterloo for 7 years, I lived in a decent neighborhood (for waterloo, at least) and I have never seen so many punks in my life. It's almost as if these kids have no respect for anyone. There are many places in waterloo that I will not go out alone, but I can't think of one in CF like that. You can try to defend waterloo all you want, but the fact of the matter is that there is very little violent crime, we don't have weekly shootings. Instead of always defending Waterloo, figure out a way to make it better because it keeps gettting worse every day. Can you honestly say that you feel safer in waterloo that you would in CF? "

mayo wrote on Sep 29, 2008 11:48 AM:

" Frequently Cedar Falls is referred to as a "rich" town and many of their residents seem to think so as well. However, the median income is $45,500. For comparison purposes the median income of West Des Moines is $6l,500, Waukee is $64,300 and Lake Forrest Il is $153,200. The median income for Iowa is $44,491, so Cedar Falls is pretty much an average income town. Without UNI this number would probably drop. "

formerwaterlooian wrote on Sep 29, 2008 12:59 PM:

" You don't have to be rich to live in CF. Some people want to live in a city where the crime is not constant. It's a choice. If you choose to live in Loo.. great, if you choose to live in CF, great. It's the same community. "

Waterloo Reader wrote on Sep 29, 2008 1:54 PM:

" Yeah, if you really want to be something special move to Johnson County, KS (according to formerwaterlooian) cfreader, sorry to break it to you but you have a "punk" problem as well. Anyone that attended the Movies Under Moon this year saw the "punk" problem run amok. Every town has its positives and negatives but when the CFer's only want to point out Waterloo's negatives while sneaking into Waterloo to do their shopping it rings hollow. Waterloo is made better by it's proximity to CF and the converse is just as true. "

" siloa, its not the parents all the time..........a kid can have the best of parents and still they end up a mess and break the law. do you blame your parents for something? is that why you are so insistent that it's the parents' fault? "

formerwaterlooian wrote on Sep 29, 2008 2:12 PM:

Out-of-towner wrote on Sep 29, 2008 2:35 PM:

" I lived in Waterloo for 20+ years and moved to Cedar Falls because I couldn't stand paying higher property taxes in Waterloo. It used to be the other way around (CF higher than 'Loo) but... years of wasteful spending by the 'Loo politicians turned that around. Sure the HOME VALUES are higher in Cedar Falls but...
I moved south because of the increased crime, high taxes and low pay. Good Luck resolving your issues. "

Waterloo Reader

Let me get this correct this crime did take place in Waterloo not Cedar Falls, or Oelwein.....
Has anything that has been posted been incorrect??? "

mayo wrote on Sep 29, 2008 5:09 PM:

" The median income of Waterloo is $44,491 which matches Iowa and is similar to Cedar Falls. "

tsouthall12 wrote on Sep 29, 2008 6:20 PM:

" Mayo please keep your facts straight, the median family income for Waterloo was $37,195 and FYI people these are facts from 2006. "

mayo wrote on Sep 29, 2008 7:54 PM:

" You are correct about the median income for Waterloo. Sorry, I typed in Waterloo to check on it and then opened the wrong window, which was Iowa. I thought it was strange that they were the same. You are also correct that these are from 2006; they all are as that is the census data that are available. "

Is Waterloo the only town where crime is committed?

Why aren't there long blogs on each and every crime committed in CF or Oldwine? "

Reader54 wrote on Sep 30, 2008 12:28 PM:

" Waterloo Reader;

Unfortunately looking at the Courier one would have to come pretty much to that conclusion!
Yes LOO is a larger city, but the numbers still prove a point that more crimes take place there.

Should we start up a new Blog on Oldwine???? "

" Waterloo Reader...Easy answer: it doesn't play into people's racial hatred and fears. How and why else has this story gotten as many responses as it has? "

formerwaterlooian wrote on Sep 30, 2008 1:49 PM:

" Waterloo is not the only town where crime is commited, but it sure seems to happen a lot for a town it's size. Waterloo reader- why didn't you go off on out of towner, he moved out of the loo. According to Loo reader you can only have an opinion if you live in Lootown. I lived there for over 20 years, but I can't have an opinion now because loo reader said so and he knows everything and oh yeah, he is always right. "

Waterloo Reader wrote on Oct 1, 2008 8:56 AM:

" formerwaterlooian (current johnsoncountian): I let out-of-towner go because his poor sentence structure made me laugh. My example: "I moved south because of the increased crime, high taxes and low pay." Did he/she really move to the south because he wanted someplace with increased crime and higher taxes? Also, no one has played the "I am superior card because I moved away" as often as you have. Face it, everyone on this blog thinks its creepy the way you continue to follow the comings and goings in Waterloo when you couldn't cut it the first time you lived here and clearly won't be back. I have relatives in Jackson County and they tell me your attitude is common-place for residents of Johnson County. They also had some great stories about Overland Park and the drug issues....oddly I never heard about this from you, the expert on OPKS. To be clear: the reason you're not allowed to share your opinion with us Waterloo is that you are not helping us fix the problems. You have the entire summer off....can I sign you up to help and the Boys and Girls Club of Waterloo next summer? Surely a educational god like yourself can spare a few months for us unwashed peasants. The only solution you ever present is "run!" Most of us are not built that way. Instead we look for a solution that helps to move the process forward. "

formerwaterlooian wrote on Oct 1, 2008 10:15 AM:

" Loo reader
Thanks for your opinion. You need to remember I never mentioned where I lived until you asked. I have NEVER bragged about OP KS. Facts are facts.. there is A LOT of crime in LOO considering the size of the city. I just didn't want to raise my family in the Loo and know too much about education to send my kids to those schools. I know you are a professional home schooler and that you know everything about everything (I've read all 3000 of your blogs). We don't see things the same and thats fine, but I am entitled to my opinion and several people agree with me. I'm sure there are drugs in OP KS- pretty sure they are everywhere. I think there has been 1 shooting a the last year.. not a shooting a week like Loo, and by the way OP has double the people. Oh yeah and OP is not known as "Little Chicago" or the "meth capital of the world". Please don't go off on where I lived when you QUOTE "drove through the area once"- I lived in Loo for 20 years and "drove through the area once" Nice.. REAL nice. "

" How can a teacher be on the blogs at 10:15 am? Don't tell me you're one of those teachers that isn't really into their gig. Too bad for your students. If you are logging on during your "planning period" I would say you don't need the planning time. By the way, I've been through OPKS a lot more than once....I was cracking a joke at your expense. I think you need to review your blogs because not that many people agree with you. And even those that agree with you sometimes think it's creepy the way you can't seem to let go of your time here in Waterloo. "

Waterloo Reader wrote on Oct 1, 2008 10:37 PM:

" Hey formerwaterlooian (currentjohnsoncoutian): My last post suffered at the hand of the blog editor. Suffice to say it was really, really funny but may have strayed over the line a little bit. (Thank you Courier Editor for helping us maintain some decorum.) Can't wait to hear from you during the school day tomorrow. "

formerwaterlooian wrote on Oct 2, 2008 4:36 PM:

" Hey loo reader- I'm at home now so I guess its alright if I blog for 2 minutes. See, I plan before and after school, so its ok for me to take 5 minutes and read the courier and blog a few times. You think that it's creepy that I spend 5 minutes a day (not everyday)on the loo site, but you have blogs on several articles.. some at 8am, 10 am, noon, 2 pm, 4pm, and as late as 11pm. Get a life!!! or a job. I know homeschooling probably takes a lot of you and you seem to still blog for hours... you're amazing. "

Waterloo Reader wrote on Oct 3, 2008 8:23 AM:

" Hey former, here's a lesson for your students: Saying something often doesn't make it right. I don't "home school" and you know it. By the way, what is wrong with "home schooling" for those that choose that option? Other than the students miss your pithy thoughts which doesn't appear to be a great loss in the big scheme of things. My schedule is less rigid than yours so you can find my blogs at all hours of the day and night. I take it as my sworn duty to defend the residents of Waterloo and the children of the Waterloo Schools from idiotic attacks....does that describe anyone we know? The difference is that my zip code is in Waterloo and yours isn't even in Iowa. If I really wanted to be difficult I would research the Overland Park High School internet usage policies and see what they would think of you blogging during your workday most likely on district owned computers. Should be too hard for them to figure out who's been there roughly 8 years or so that came from Waterloo East High School. Let me head off your response at the pass: Yes, it's OK with my employer that I blog during the workday. The only caveat is that I need to take the sillier things that you or Ozy drop on this site and circulate them around for the entertainment value. We are very entertained over here. "
