IRS to add employees to NE Iowa offices
By JIM OFFNER, Courier Business Editor
WATERLOO --- The U.S. Internal Revenue Service is seeking revenue officer candidates for a still-unspecified number of positions in its Waterloo and Cedar Rapids offices.

The additional jobs are unrelated to work that Waterloo-based CBE Group Inc. has performed on a contract basis for the IRS for the last couple of years, helping the federal government to collect delinquent taxes.

CBE also has had a student-loan collection contract with the U.S. Department of Education since 2004.

"This is completely separate," said Chris Miller, an IRS spokesman in the agency's Milwaukee-based office that oversees its operations in Wisconsin, Iowa and Nebraska. "Any efforts that have to do with an outside vendor being contracted are not related to this effort."

Applicants for the new IRS jobs can apply only online at www.usajobs.opm.gov. The deadline is Sept. 29.

Revenue officers are trained in both tax law and collection techniques necessary for the collection of delinquent taxes and delinquent tax returns. Duties include conducting research, interviews, investigations and analysis of financial information for assigned cases, often at the taxpayer's home or business. Revenue officers counsel taxpayers on their tax obligations and determine how they can best resolve their delinquencies, while also ensuring that their rights are protected.

The IRS currently has a Waterloo office, 201 Tower Park Drive, with fewer than 10 employees, Miller said.
