Protests brewing at RNC; Gopher students told to behave
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) -- A group of University of Minnesota students is denouncing an administration letter advising students to use good judgment if they engage in protests surrounding the Republican National Convention.

"This is clearly an attempt to scare students and is meant to have a chilling effect on our participation in the protests of the RNC," Students for a Democratic Society organizer Stephanie Taylor said in a statement Thursday.

The e-mail sent to students from Vice Provost for Student Affairs Jerry Rinehart was dated Tuesday. In addition to welcoming students back to school, the e-mail also noted that there might be traffic issues due to the convention. It also addressed protests.

"While I encourage you to engage in the political process, please use good judgment regarding participation in activities that might violate state or local laws or the University's Student Conduct Code," Rinehart wrote. He reminded students that the conduct code extends to activities that take place off campus, and that illegal activity could lead to discipline.

Rinehart told The Associated Press that the message was a hard one to send because "we really do want the students to be involved and feel passionate about the leadership of our country."

" If the students get outta hand, give em a dose of the taser!

Both conventions seem to bring out the fringe protesters, wingnuts with too much time & too little knowledge.

" Hmmm...these protesters (at both conventions) add up to a lot of extra expense for the American taxpayer. "

" Do you ever wonder why nearly all protesters are liberals? Activists, they call them. They show up wherever Bush or Cheney or Rove speak. They protest the war, the coalplant, more drilling for oil. They protest how we treat terrorists in Abu Gharib or Guantonimo. I agree with Union, too much time and too little knowledge. Give em the taser or my old time favorite, the fire hose. Or better yet, join the human race and get a job. Contribute something to society other than civil disorder. They really are just a pain in the arse. My local favorite is the nutjob in CF who protests the Waterloo coalplant even though she lives two blocks from the CF coal plant! That's credibility! "

" perhaps most protesters are liberal because liberals tend to be free-thinkers and conservatives tend to be sheep who latch on to their "idols" (i.e. limbaugh, W and o'reilly) and march in lock-step without questioning anything. "

" tim, that's the problem right there..
You aren't open-minded. You're obviously narrow-minded to think conservatives tend to be brainwashed, flag-waving, redneck sheep. and that we all get our news from O'Reilly & Rush...your head is in the sand by continuing to belief that tripe.

I don't even watch/listen to people like that..I read the paper and can see the idiot protesters on ANY news broadcast. I question the motivation of protesters who taunt & ridicule the police officers that are there to keep things from getting out of hand. How can you respect that sort of activity?? "

" i need to start inserting some sort of code word or something in the comments i make that are intended to be sarcastic. "

" Yeah, I love liberals open mindedness. They love and preach diversity, as long as you see things their way (abortion, gay marriage, global warming, to name a few). They'd love to have a black or woman as president, as long as they're not republican. I love their belief that they can tax the U.S. to prosperity. I love their solution to the oil crisis: Lawsuit us into a position where we can't build any new coal or nuke plants, no new gas refineries, no new drilling in the U.S. What's the solution? Let's blame Big Oil! that must be why we're in this predicament! I love their inventiveness in turning a bi-racial man (white/African) into a black presidential candidate! Brilliant! I love the idea that any thing we say against him is branded as racist! Brilliant! I love how they wanted change so bad, we got stuck with Pelosi and her deadbeat congressional cohorts, whose only plan was to win the election and gain power! No real game-plan on how to address the countries many needs! Brilliant! I love how the ACLU and other liberal legal groups go the extra mile to defend and free the very people who mean to harm us. I love how they will fight for any and every abortion, no matter how heinious it may be, yet scream bloody murder to prevent the execution of vicious killers. yeah, i love my liberal brethren. The older I get the more I believe the old axiom, "if you're a conservative before the age of 30, you don't have a heart. If your a liberal past the age of 30, you don't have a brain". "

fatman2 wrote on Aug 30, 2008 3:37 PM:

" Oh Tim, one other thing. I haven't listened to Rush in years. Not sure who O'Reilly is and I generally distrust and dislike all politicians. But I do think with my own brain and follow in my heart what I beleive is right. I wish you well, you wil need it. "

cire wrote on Aug 30, 2008 4:54 PM:

" tim, you can say you were trying to be sarcastic all you want, but regardless, you believe what you said...you've proved that in all your posts on these boards. "

" This just in from CNN: headquarters of protest group, described as anarchist, raided in St. Paul. Recovered were stockpiles of equipment, guns and urine. Urine? that's real classy, definately something for a liberal to be proud of. How about the protestors maybe cutting their hair, get a job and get on with their life? "

the_bat wrote on Aug 30, 2008 11:47 PM:

" Yeah, Tim. You should leave sarcasm to those of us who are good at it.

Like me, for example.

" 250+ arrested at the RNC. Young liberals throwing a hissy fit, burning things, assulting people. Take a good look America, here's your future leaders of the Democratic Party in twenty years. Something to be proud of. How many Republican protestors were arrested in Denver? Probably not too many. Why? My guess is that they were working. "

Waterloo Reader wrote on Sep 3, 2008 8:29 AM:

" Nobama, leader of the Obama Bin Biden ticket was a far-left radical that belonged and believed in an organization that wanted to bomb government buildings. I thought the explanation of the buckets of urine was as good as Billary's definition of "is."

Does anyone else think that ozymandias has a new name? Oh scoot, why did you forsake your comic-book persona? "

DoesAnyoneCare wrote on Sep 3, 2008 12:24 PM:

" As a republican, and going with the fairness of conversation act.. I need to let people know that the people causing the problems in St. Paul are not the liberal, democratic, anti-war protesters. The people causing the problems are anarchests (I think I spelled that wrong) and radicals. These are the same people that cause all the problems at the G4 conventions. Watching Cspan Monday the anti war protest was a peacful event where nobady was arrested. To lump the radicals to the democrats is wrong. "
