Second Agriprocessors supervisor enters plea
By JEFF REINITZ, Courier Staff Writer
CEDAR RAPIDS — A second supervisor at Agriprocessors has pleaded guilty to charges in connection with a May immigration raid at the Postville meatpacking plant.

Martin de la Rosa-Loera, 43, of Postville, changed his plea to guilty for a single count of aiding and abetting the harboring of undocumented aliens in U.S. District Court in Cedar Rapids Wednesday.

De la Rosa’s plea agreement has been sealed, but prosecutors said the agreement requires him to cooperate with law enforcement in an ongoing investigation.

The charge was filed Tuesday, and de la Rosa waived formal indictment of the new charge. He had been arrested in July on a similar charge.

He supervised the poultry kill and four other departments at Agriprocessors.

In court, he admitted he knew the crime of harboring undocumented workers was occurring at Agriprocessors in April and May and assisted in the commission of the offense.

De la Rosa faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. Sentencing will be at a later date, and he remains in custody until then.

Last week, the Agriprocessors beef kill supervisor, Juan Carlos Guerrero-Espinoza, 35, pleaded to a count of conspiracy to hire illegal aliens and one count of aiding and abetting the hiring of illegal aliens. He faces up to 10 years behind bars.

Guerrero’s plea agreement was also sealed, but prosecutors said it requires him to cooperate with the investigation, too.

Agents with the U.S Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement raided Agriprocessors May 12 detained 389 employees, mainly from Guatemala and Mexico.
