Iowa Republicans urge special session
By Courier Des Moines Bureau
DES MOINES – Republican members of the Iowa House of Representatives are calling for a special session of the Legislature to reallocate funding to help with storm recovery.

A group of nine GOP lawmakers has suggested that the Legislature cancel construction of a new state office building in Des Moines and a new maximum security prison in Fort Madison and instead use the funds for local infrastructure, housing, buyouts and flood plain mitigation.

Iowa Gov. Chet Culver has said he will wait for a Sept. 2 report from the Rebuild Iowa Advisory Commission before deciding whether he’ll call the Legislature into special session.

“We’re playing a guessing game on what the governor is going to do. Our constituents need help now. Reallocating funds in the time of crisis is an absolute necessity because we don't want to pile a fiscal disaster on top of a natural disaster,” said House Minority Whip Kraig Paulsen, R-Hiawatha, in a statement.

The Republican lawmakers issued a statement Wednesday listing several measures the Legislature could enact during a special session to help with disaster recovery.

They suggest that the Legislature use money in the Iowa Values Fund and the Iowa Power Fund to create grants for small businesses and local governments dealing with the aftermath of disasters.
