DES MOINES --- Iowa college students affected by flooding and natural disasters this year will be eligible for $5,000 grants to help offset the costs of schooling.
Iowa Gov. Chet Culver announced today that the Iowa College Student Aid Commission would make the one-time grants available.
"As these students go back to school, I am pleased to announce that state government is here to help," Culver said in a statement "This new grant program will provide the resources needed to help affected students return life to normal and ensure that this school year gets off to a great start."
Students must be Iowa residents to qualify for the grants. Either the student, his or her spouse or the student's parents that he or she is dependent upon must have registered for assistance through the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
More information about who qualifies for the grants and how to apply can be found at the commission's Web site at
www.iowacollegeaid.gov .
The priority submission deadline to apply for the grants is Sept. 15, although applications will be accepted after that date.
The state has set aside $500,000 for the program.
