Lucid changed to Shag's after dispute

CEDAR FALLS --- The nightclub Shags, which closed in 2004 after two decades, is back in its old location in Black Hawk Village in the nightclub formerly known as Lucid.

"We have found ourselves in the middle of a trademark and trade name dispute with Lucid Absinthe, a new liquor product in the U.S.," said Darin Beck, CEO of Barmuda Corp.

"Since Lucid is so new and not yet well-established, we've decided not to spend the money fighting for the name, but rather change the name of the club."

Shags will debut with a comeback party Wednesday in the location where Lucid opened just a couple of months ago.

The new Shags will be much like the old Shags --- also previously known as Club Shagnasty's --- with a bigger investment from the Lucid venture.

From Wednesday through Saturday, Shags will feature music and go-go dancers. Admission is age 19 and older, or 18 with college ID.

Shags will open at 9 p.m. and close at 2 a.m.

Barmuda also is bringing back the Barmuda Shuttle, which will have a set route and will operate every Wednesday, Friday and Saturday night, and be available for charters by calling 266-9994.

For details regarding the new Shags, visit www.barmuda.com.

" They have a shuttle now? That would have been REALLY nice back in the early 90's when I used to go there. "

" Number one, I appreciate all the good that Darren Beck has done for the Cedar Valley. Thank you.

However, to say that the name change has anything to do with an alcohol that is coming back to the US is insane. (Not a new liquor, just allowed back in the USA after a brief ban)

The name change has to do with college kids coming back and not wanting to pay $15 for a drink. The name change has to do with Club Lucid being empty EVERY night.

Don't believe me? Fine, I don't care. However, my question to you would be....
Why change the way you run the bar? Why not just change the name and keep the "upscale" bar that everyone "craved" when you opened it? You know, the big city nightclub that the Cedar Valley lacked? Why go back to the twofer and threefer machine?

Darren, can't you just say something didn't work and go from there? "

" Darrin Beck needs less yes men. Any person with some common sense could have told him that college students aren't going to pay $100 for a table, even with unlimited liquor.

I just hope that this Shag's doesn't have the same problems that the old Shag's did. "
