Overnight vandalism occurs to vehicles in C.F.
CEDAR FALLS — Cedar Falls police are investigating vandalism to dozens of vehicles overnight Wednesday to Thursday morning. Vehicles parked in the College Hill area of town were marked with appeared to be paint used by car dealerships.

The paint didn’t cause any permanent damage to the vehicles and should wash off the vehicles, said Cedar Falls Police Capt. Mike Hayes.

Police had tallied more than 50 affected vehicles before 9 a.m.today. The vehicles tagged were marked with sequential numbers.

“There appears to be no rhyme or reason to it,” Hayes said.

Police dealt with two similar incidents in the last year in other areas of Cedar Falls, he added.

Hayes asks anyone with information on the vandalism to call 291-2515.

" Personally, I would take a little window-paint over nine or ten 9mm bullets.

Still sucks that these people are going to have to clean up after some immature jerks. "

" Paint > bullets. Either way they need to catch these punks and throw the book at them, people that don't have any respect for others property have no respect for themselves and therefore have little conscience which allows them to hurt others so easily. "

" likestodebate, I am going to have to disapoint you, as I cannot disagree. Perhaps someone else will come along and argue that they should not be punished, but I think they should. $500 in fines is a nice start (as that would cover a wash/wax for most owners at an automated car wash) and some community service cleaning public spaces such as parks and public restrooms would be nice follow up. "

" Oh NO!

The crime in CF is out of control! We need to elect Waterloo Reader, so they can build us a wall, and issue passports for all Waterloo residents seeking to enter CF!

What will these poor, poor people ever do now?

Oh yeah, grab a hose and have their vehicle fixed in 5 minutes. "

Both of our cars were tagged on Iowa St this AM. I need to wash my truck anyways.
I'm not upset about it. "

" In the interest of full disclosure: the "build a wall" idea was originally ozyman's. I only made fun of it to poke fun at myopic people like ozy. The passport idea is mine though. "

" ok, am I missing something here? I dont see in any of the posts where there was something mentioned about making it a w/cf thing? Deleted post maybe? As a victim of having a camper stolen in CF and just 2 days ago, someone slim jim my truck, my question is, what is the matter with people, were they not taught anything about leaving others property alone. I know what I would do if I found out my kid was involved. Parents need to take back control. There are some that need a real good waking up. And it isnt as easy as just grabbing a hose. They have absolutely NO business doing what they are doing. If they are caught they should be made to clean every car/vehicle with a toothbrush. What is the matter with people?? "

ozymandias wrote on Aug 7, 2008 2:25 PM:

" Kris,

The comments about paint being better than bullets is a reference to recent crimes in Waterloo where parked cars are being used for target practice. Evidently some people are defensive about their rights to shoot at cars.

Sorry to hear about your camper. Hopefully it turns up.

Reader54,
Slim Jims are flat pieces of metal used to 'jimmy' locks open -- same as when people used to use a coat hanger to unlock a door.

Waterloo Reader,
What was once used in jest, you seem to have latched onto and turned into a catch phrase. I made the comment one time, in an obviously facetious manner, and you have taken to parroting it at every opportunity. "

" There is a lot of flood damage in the parks yet to be cleaned up-send these kids to one of them every day 'til school starts and make them work their little vandalizing butts off to pay for what they did. They'll go to bed tired at night instead of being out running all over and causing trouble. No slap on the wrist, no check from mom and dad-work, sweat, sore muscles, etc. Maybe that will calm them down. "

" is washable paint on cars reallly considered breaking news? they painted numbers so it wasn't even crude or rude things put on the cars. granted it would be a pain in the put to have to deal with this, but come on! it's a couple kids playing prank. if these kids are doing no worse then so be it! "

CEDARRUN wrote on Aug 7, 2008 6:37 PM:

" How do you know it was a bunch of kids and not one of the mean cranky senior citizens who live in the neighborhood. The guy they are blaming on the anthrax killings was 62 years old. "

kris wrote on Aug 7, 2008 8:03 PM:

" A Prank? Hardly. Would you feel the same if it happened to your property. I think not. They want to have fun, play video games. What next, a little paint ball action on a house is just a prank. If it isnt yours........leave it alone. "

barbie200455 wrote on Aug 8, 2008 3:37 PM:

" It's funny how the blame is placed on everyone but those responsible. Any kid over the age of 8 knows this is wrong and should be held accountable. You are responsible for your own actions, and parents do need to pay more attention to the whereabouts of their kids....but this probably was done by someone old enough to know better. That's the sad part. I hope they find who did it and prosecute them. Vandalism leads to other crimes. We don't need that in Cedar Falls or Waterloo. "

" Two things:
1- Why is this in the paper? Thanks Courier for giving these people what they want ATTENTION. The exact reason I did not report our vehicles "art" to the police.

2- As for it being just numbers, that is incorrect, one of our vehicles had a number AND a crude drawing of a part of the male anatomy. It was also a hassle as I was trying to leave for work and had to waste my time cleaning my car off. "
