Buchanan disaster center opens
INDEPENDENCE --- The Federal Emergency Management Agency will be setting up a disaster recovery center at the Aurora Comet Center for residents affected by the May 25 tornado or flooding connected to the storm.

Buchanan, Black Hawk and Delaware counties were declared federal disaster areas Friday by President Bush. Since then, FEMA has been working to establish what the needs of those counties are, agency officials said.

The center is located in between Hazleton, which sustained a large amount of tornado damage, and Lamont, which suffered from severe flooding after 8 inches of rain fell in one day.

The disaster center will be opened today at 9 a.m., according to the Buchanan County Emergency Management Agency. The center will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Residents can register for help by calling (800) 621-FEMA or going to www.fema.gov.
