Tickets now available for 'Evening of Art & Jazz in the Garden'
By MELODY PARKER, Courier Arts / Special Sections Editor
An evening in the garden usually means pulling weeds, moving plants or mowing the lawn.
On June 6, leave those chores behind and spend a few hours strolling through a garden. At "An Evening of Jazz & Art in the Garden" guests will sample great food, wines and beer, listen to music and bid on silent auction items, including artwork donated by some of the Cedar Valley's finest artists and garden design packages. Several artists will be on the grounds creating their art.
The fundraising event is from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Cedar Valley Arboretum and Botanic Garden, located at Hawkeye Community College, presented by Courier Communications. Sponsors are CU Restaurant and Hy-Vee Wine and Spirits.
Tickets are $45 per person or $75 per couple, available by calling the arboretum at 226-4966.
The event will take place rain or shine. Tents will be scattered around the grounds for cover.
Funds will benefit the arboretum's Petals & Blooms program, which matches children with disabled adults. They work in the garden together throughout the growing season.
Music will be provided by Bob Washut and Chris Merz.
There will be multiple hors d'ouveres stations, each paired with complimentary wines and beers. Guests can sample seafood, including whole-roasted salmon, clams, shrimp and mini crab cakes; marinated skewers prepared on-site by CU's Chef Mark; Asian-inspired sauteed dishes, such as cashew chicken, beef, broccoli and shrimp and scallops; fresh, seasonal fruits and melons, cheeses, meats, gourmet crackers and elegant, bite-sized desserts.
Throughout the garden, interactive art will be taking place. Paco Rosic, the artist who created the Sistine Chapel replica in his restaurant, Galleria De Paco, will be painting, and well-known potter Doug Reynolds will be throwing pots. Guests may even be able to throw on a smock and try their hands at throwing a few pots.
Pastel artist Tim Kuhlman will create pastels, while artisan Mickey Johnson will craft jewelry. All of these items will be part of a silent art auction of work created by Cedar Valley artists.
Artwork also has been donated by Jim Kerns, ceramics artist; Jolene Rosauer, photographer; Michelle Maring Miller and Esther Cheng, watercolorists; Jerry Cowger, metal art; Ginger Penaluna, art photography; Bill Close, watercolor, woodcarving; Mary Schneider-Behrens, mixed media; Joan Webster-Vore, visual art; Brandon Pollock, photography; and Doug Cole, potter.
Guests can also bid on a garden design created and planted by Kelly Conrad, Harmony House horticulture therapist and greenhouse manager, a selection of wines, items needed for the Petals & Blooms program and more.
All parking is at Hawkeye Community College with a walkway to the event (comfortable shoes are recommended). The arboretum is also handicap accessible with parking at the Arboretum.
