Panthers bounce back, pound Indiana State
By Courier staff
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Less than 24 hours after its worst offensive showing in the past month, the Northern Iowa baseball team rebounded with a 12-4 victory over Indiana State on Saturday afternoon.
The Panthers, held to just one hit in the first seven innings of a 6-2 loss Friday night, registered 13 hits and capitalized on 15 free passes — 10 walks and five hit batsmen — to even the three-game series and stay atop the Missouri Valley Conference standings.
Brandon Douglas was 3-for-5 with three runs scored, while Eddie Almonte went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, and Dane Embury had two hits and three runs scored for UNI (15-10, 4-1 MVC).
Chris Lopez got UNI off on the right foot with a two-run double in the opening frame, and Brett Douglas followed with a two-out, two-run single in the second to chase Indiana State (8-16, 4-4) starter Matt Shelton.
Then, leading 6-3 in the fifth, UNI tallied four runs without a hit. The Panthers took advantage of three walks and three hit-by-pitches to open a 10-3 cushion.
UNI starter Guido Fonseca improved to 6-0, becoming the first pitcher in the Valley to reach that total. Fonseca struck out five and allowed four earned runs in 6 1/3 innings.
Panther coach Rick Heller said outfielder Deric Manrique may have possibly torn a ligament in his right shoulder during Friday’s game.
Levi Ferguson, who didn’t travel with the team Thursday because of illness, had his parents drive him to Terre Haute late Friday. Ferguson started in center field Saturday, while Manrique served as the designated hitter.
The Panthers, who have won 11 of their last 13 games, go for the series win at noon today. Taylor Sinclair (2-1, 5.79 ERA) is the scheduled starter for UNI.
