Cyclone notes: Heavyweight David Zabriskie’s win over Oklahoma State in the finals last year gave Iowa State is first conference crown since it tied OSU in 1987. The Cyclones have won 12 Big 12 titles altogether, but not back-to-back since 1979-80.

Cyler Sanderson and Jake Varner were each conference runner-ups last year.

Zabriskie is riding a six-match win streak, while Nick Fanthorpe and Nick Gallick have each won four straight. Varner, the national runner-up a year ago is undefeated at 23-0.

Varner and Zabriskie have not lost to a conference opponent this year.

Ninety-three of ISU’s starters’ 210 wins this year have been in bonus-point fashion, including 29 falls.

Iowa State won with 66 1/2 points last year. Missouri was second and Oklahoma State was third.

There are 38 berths on the line at the Big 12 championships, with a top-three finish earning a wrestler an automatic bid to the national tournament. Eight wild-card qualifiers will be determined after the meet.

Five champs return from last year – Missouri’s Raymond Jordan and Max Askren at 184 and 197, Oklahoma State’s Coleman Scott (133) and Nathan Morgan (141) and Zabriskie.

Iowa State’s lineup:

125 — Tyler Clark (17-8), so.;  133 — Nick Fanthorpe (26-4), so.; 141 — Nick Gallick (20-11), so.; 149 — Mitch Mueller (20-10), so.; 157 — Cyler Sanderson (26-4), so.; 165 — Jon Reader (24-6), fr.; 174 — Aron Scott (10-10), sr.; 184 — Jake Varner (23-0), so.; 197 — David Bertolino (20-10), sr.; Hwt. — David Zabriskie (24-4), so.

Quoting the Cyclones:

“This is going to be a real exciting weekend. There are no heavy favorites going in. Just like the whole college season, there is a lot of parity.

“We obviously want to be at our best at this time of the year. We need to be ready to go in that first round. With only five teams, the team that has a good first round will be in a real good position to win this.

“The key for us is to have all of our sophomores have their best performances at Big 12s and at nationals. I have all the confidence in the world in these guys, and they are starting to feel it themselves.”

– Iowa State head coach Cael Sanderson
