OSAGE --- After 34 years in education, an energetic couple has decided it's time to move on.
Rick and Jody Dosser will both retire at the end of the school year.
Jody has been volleyball coach and associate professor of physical education at Waldorf College since 2001. Rick became the middle and high school principal at Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock the same year.
"As Jody and I thought about it, we realized our life's journey has changed now, and we felt retiring together was the thing to do," Rick said.
Rick, a native of Minnesota, earned degrees from Waldorf College and Minnesota State University at Mankato. In 1973, he joined Osage High School, where he taught industrial arts and coached middle school, ninth- and 10th-grade football. He was also defensive coordinator for the varsity football team and coached track. He eventually became athletic director.
Jody also attended Waldorf. She moved on to Minnesota State University and graduated in 1973 with a bachelor of arts degree in physical education, health and coaching. She later earned a master's degree in physical education and sports administration from Mankato State.
She began her teaching and coaching career at Osage High School in 1973. During her 27 years there, her volleyball teams won 17 North Iowa Conference titles and advanced to the state tournament 10 times.
At Waldorf, Dosser's team won the Midwest Collegiate Tournament in 2007. She earned all-star coaching honors and volunteer awards through the Iowa High School Athletic Association and Amateur Athletic Union.
Tragedy hit the Dossers' family in March 2007. Their son, Jermiah, died after he was struck from behind by a truck while on a motorcycle.
A few weeks earlier, Jermiah, 24, became an organ donor, according to his parents. .
"We learned that it's so important to keep the people who are special to you in your life and let them know they are special," Jody said.
The Dossers are now active in raising awareness about organ and tissue donation with the Iowa Donor Network and the Lions Eye Bank.
