Youth pavilion opening pushed back, now set for early '08
By MELODY PARKER, ourier Arts / Special Sections Editor
WATERLOO --- Good things are worth the wait.

Due to a series of project delays, the December opening of the Phelps Youth Pavilion has been postponed.

"It takes time to get interactive exhibits into place ... not only is there construction, there's installation of furnishings and other exhibits. We want everything to be perfect, to be in place and complete when we open the doors to the public," said Cammie Scully, executive director of the Waterloo Center of the Arts.

Plans are being made for an early 2008 opening.

Plans for the Phelps Youth Pavilion grew out of a desire to bring the nationally recognized Junior Art gallery out of the WCA basement and into a larger gallery.

The new Junior Art Gallery will be nearly double in size. The state-of-the-art Pavilion's remaining space will include a colorful palette of hands-on educational, experiential and visual activities for children and young adults, as well as other features, including a digital art studio, ceramics art studio, two-story gift shop, cafe and dedicated storage space.

The Junior Art Gallery was established 35 years ago. More than 15,000 Cedar Valley schoolchildren and adults annually visit the gallery. Numerous initiatives have been made to move the nationally acclaimed gallery out of the basement. Early fund-raising efforts failed, but were revived in 1992 with a generous bequest from Florence Kies. Those efforts were put on hold when fund raising began for Young Arena. The campaign was reinvigorated in conjunction with development of the Riverfront Renaissance project adjacent to the Youth Pavilion.

"The community has been supportive of our expansion, and we've all been waiting a long time. We just want to meet everyone's expectations," Scully said.

Donors who received invitations to the opening December gala will be receiving new invitations with the new date.

" What a sad waste of tax dollars. 20 Years from now when this money pit is sucking even more tax dollars it should renamed for the Mayor that wanted it. 15,000 people per year? You get more than that at a toy show. "
