FAYETTE --- His 12-year-old daughter Emily thought he might look a little weird, but UIU President Dr. Alan Walker's wife, Debbie, wasn't concerned.
A fan of actor Patrick Stewart, she says her husband is as attractive with his head shaved as he was before his haircut Friday that came after $70,000 was pledged to benefit scholarships for UIU students.
"I'm a big believer that a head of hair doesn't make the man," said Debbie Walker just before she kissed her husband's new, bald head. "You're a good sport, dear," she told him.
"I have less hair now than when I was born," said the man who previously sported a full head of hair and has never had less than a flat-top cut.
Walker, president of the private Upper Iowa University, agreed to shave his head if $70,000 was raised in a telethon-style fundraiser Friday morning on the college campus. Proceeds benefit student scholarships. Walker and 27 others from the university who make up Team Peacock will pedal RAGBRAI this week to raise awareness of the college.
Walker said he's disappointed he won't be in the same physical shape for this year's 400-mile plus ride as he was last year at this time.
"I just got back last night from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where I was visiting some of our satellite centers," he said. UIU also has educational centers in Hong Kong and Singapore. The past 10 days he had little opportunity to train, but he says of the sometimes grueling RAGBRAI, "It's going to be tough, but I'll gut it out. Although they say this is the flattest route ever, this thing about Iowa being flat is a myth. There will be hills."
Walker's head was shaved by Stan Woodson, who's provided barbering services for UIU presidents since the 1960s.
As he checked out his new look in the mirror of a compact, Walker laughed.
"Lance Armstrong's view of me from the back will be a little different this year," he said.
The president thanked all who supported the cause. He said UIU's efforts to help students afford the cost of a college education "is what separates us from a lot of other schools."
