Hawkeye man arrested for making meth
HAWKEYE --- A Fayette County resident is in jail after authorities discovered a methamphetamine lab in his home.
Authorities charged Scott Zell, 45, of Hawkeye, on Tuesday with manufacturing meth and possession of marijuana with intent to deliver.
Law enforcement officials discovered the lab after members of the Fayette County Sheriff's Department conducted a search warrant on Zell's house on Wilbur Street.
Manufacturing meth is a Class B felony punishable by up to 25 years in prison. Possession with intent to deliver, a Class D felony, carries a penalty of up to five years in prison.
The charges are enhanced, however, because Zell allegedly was making the meth in the presence of a minor and his home is within 1,000 feet of a city park, according to the sheriff's department. Each enhancement adds five years to the length of possible prison terms.
The Fayette County Clandestine Lab team processed the scene assisted by the Iowa State Patrol, Hawkeye Fire Department and Waverly Police Department.
Zell will remain in the Fayette County Jail until making an appearance in court, according to the sheriff's office.
