DUBUQUE -- There was no celebrating Friday.
Not in the camp that appears to have a big upper hand, and definitely not in the camps of the three top contenders.
Second-ranked Augsburg College put itself in strong position to earn its 10th national championship with a solid first day Friday at the Division III National Wrestling Championships at the Five Flags Center.
The Auggies advanced seven wrestlers to the semifinals and were assured of nine all-Americans as they hold a 13-point lead over Wartburg College, 75 1/2 to 62 1/2.
"There is no celebrating going on because we have a big day tomorrow," said Augsburg head coach Jeff Swenson. "We have a lot of respect for everyone who is here and if we don't stay focused, we could be in trouble."
Among Augsburg's semifinalists are four top-seeded wrestlers -- Quincy Osborn at 141, Jared Evans at 149, Jeremy Anderson at 157 and Marcus LeVesseur at 165.
While the Auggies' title isn't in the books yet, Wartburg, Wisconsin-La Crosse and Luther College, the three teams considered to be top contenders, will have a big uphill climb to catch the leaders.
Wartburg had one of its worst first days in recent history as the Knights had four of their 10 qualifiers eliminated.
"We had some young kids who didn't perform to their capability," said Wartburg head coach Jim Miller, who brought seven first time national qualifiers. "It was tough and obviously it is the national tournament. We won some big matches, but we lost some real tough matches."
Wartburg, the defending champions, had five wrestlers advance to the semifinals and will have six all-Americans, the fewest it's had since it had five in 2001.
Two matches which will have Miller tossing and turning in his bed were at 125 and 157.
In a key early quarterfinal match, the Knights' Robert Struthers lost to Augsburg's Seth Flodeen, 5-2, with victory within his grasp.
Struthers and Flodeen were tied at 1-1 with 11 seconds left in their match, and Struthers riding Flodeen. Struthers needed just five more seconds to gain riding time and a 2-1 victory.
But with one false start already against him, Struthers was called for three consecutive false starts giving Flodeen two points. (Wrestlers are allowed two false starts before a third is cause of a penalty point awarded against them.)
"I've been coaching over 30 years and I've never lost a match like that," said Miller. "I'm not too happy about it."
At 157, third-seeded Aaron Wernimont was headlocked to his back by the College of New Jersey's Joseph Galante and pinned.
Wernimont won his wrestleback match, but he was expected to contend for a national championship.
Making the semifinals for the Knights were Jake Helvey at 133, Jason Knipp at 165, Romeo Djoumessi at 184, T.J. Miller at 197 and Blake Gillis at 285.
Said Miller, "I don't know if we will be competing for a team title, but I know we are going to be competing for some individual stuff. and obviously that is real important to us."
One guy who is happy to still be wrestling is Knipp, who left Iowa State after 3 1/2 years to take one shot at being an all-American.
Knipp just missed qualifying for the Division I nationals last year, and lost his spot to Cyler Sanderson at the start of this year.
By advancing to the semifinals, he assured himself of his all-American status, but he isn't satisfied.
He is now 14-2 and will get another crack at Augsburg's LeVesseur in today's semifinals.
LeVesseur, seeking his fourth national title, improved to 152-0 with a pair of victories and has already beaten Knipp twice this year.
"I couldn't have sat and watched the season end," said Knipp. "There is no better place to come to and do it than Wartburg. It was my last year, and I put in a lot of work. It was too much work to just sit and watch it end."
Luther, with aspirations of challenging for a title, had a disappointing day. The Norse will end the tournament with just four all-Americans after losing four of its wrestlers.
Nate Hansen at 125 and Matt Pyle at 149 advanced to the semifinals, while Travis Grawin at 141 and Alec Bonander at 197 are alive on the backside.
"Yeah, it was a bad day," said Luther coach Dave Mitchell. "We didn't have enough fight when it counted. We just needed more fight when it counted."
Wisconsin-La Crosse, under former Wartburg assistant Dave Malecek, also had a disappointing day.
The Eagles will have six all-Americans, but lost two key wrestlers, including Jim Swanson at 197. Swanson was a national runner-up a year ago.
Another blow occurred when defending 149-pound national champion Jake Larsen was beaten in the quarterfinals.
After first-round action, Wartburg held a slim lead over Luther, 19 to 16 1/2, while Augsburg lurked in third with 14 1/2 points.
The Knights racked up eight bonus points -- a pin from Knipp, three majors and two technical falls (Miller and Gillis) -- during the first session.
Luther got pins from Pyle, Bonander and Miller, while Hansen and Paul Meirick each started their tournaments with major decisions.
Waterloo Columbus' Kyle Forness went 0-2 at 157 and was eliminated.
