NCAA Wrestling championships — semis, round of 12

Nelson wrote this in the late afternoon:

Semifinals are 11 minutes away. I’ve been running into former Wartburg three-time national champion Dustin Hinschberger left and right. But now I know why, his seats are right behind press row. I just throught it was  a bunch of strange coincidences.

Iowa’s Charlie Falck up early on Minnesota’s Zach Sanders in a 125 wrestle back, 2-0. It’s 2-1 now. Iowa needs to win all five of these round of 12 matches to have a chance to repeat as team champs. (more…)

NCAA Wrestling Championships – Day One

Nelson wrote this in the early morning:

St. LOUIS, Missouri — We’re 1 1/2 hours away from first-round action, and I’m already getting excited.

I got to the arena shortly before 9 a.m. and all the competitors were sitting on the mats waiting for skin checks and to weigh in. That brings me to a funny story. NCAA media coordinator Laura Cannon was walking blindly when she looked up and saw only bare bottoms.

She said she immediately decided she needed to find a different route to her destination. (more…)

ST. LOUIS — Less than 24 hours until Division I championships get under way here at the Scottrade Center.

After talking to several coaches and athletes, the mood has been pretty relexed. That will probably change sometime around 11 a.m. tomorrow when first-round action begins.

It was a nice easy drive down from Waterloo this morning, if not for a couple of pit stops, would’ve made it in around 5 1/2 hours. I made an executive decision to make a stop in Hannibal, Mo. on my way home Sunday to walk, possibly, in the same steps as Mark Twain. Maybe some of his brillant writing ability will rub off on me. UNI assistant wins Bronze in Iran

Nelson wrote this at around evening time:

From USA Wrestling

TEHRAN, Iran – 2008 University World champion Tervel Dlagnev (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) won a bronze medal match at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. on the final day of the 2009 Takhti Cup.

Dlagnev defeated Ahmad Rasouli of Iran, 2-0, 2-1 in the bronze medal match.

“Tervel hit a nice low single, stood up and came behind for the first takedown. Rasouli tried to shoot in on him late in the period and Tervel got behind him for the second point. In the second period, he got arm-spinned, and Rasouli led 1-0. Tervel got a leg attack, brought it to a double leg, split him and took him to his back for two points and the win,” said National Teams Director Mitch Hull.

The three other U.S. wrestlers who competed on Friday were unable to qualify for the medal rounds.

The U.S. won two bronze medals at the Takhti Cup this year. Mike Tamillow (Colorado Springs, Colo./unattached) captured a bronze medal at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. on Thursday.

The United States placed third in the team standings, behind the champion team from Iran and the runner-up team from Russia.
