NWCA National Duals – Round I

Nelson wrote this around lunchtime:

Despite some bad weather overnight, thousands of fans managed to make it to the UNI-Dome for the first day of the NWCA National Duals.

Here’s an early look at the local teams – Iowa rolled over Wyoming 38-3. The lone loss came at 125 where Michael Martinez beat JJ Krutsinger, 6-4. Krutsinger will wrestle for the Hawkeyes all weekend as returning all-American Charlie Falck will not wrestle.

Falck suffered an ankle injury at the Midlands and the Hawkeyes are holding him out. Krutsinger led Martinez early, 2-0, but the Martinez, who took a redshirt year and trained at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., scored a pair of escapes and two takedowns to rally for the victory.

Top-ranked Wartburg College rolled in its Division III opener, 46-0, over Wabash College. Luther, who the Knights will face next, beat Olivet College, 25-17.

Other Division I first round winners were Minnesota, Penn State over No. Missouri, 20-19, and Nebraska over Northwestern, 19-18.

Top-seeded Nebraska-Omaha rolled in its Division II opener, 36-9, over Limestone College, while Lindenwood, the top-seeded NAIA squad, beat Oklahoma City, 38-9.

To kick of the second batch of Division I matches, Iowa State’s Tyler Clark upset defending 125-pound national champion Angel Escobedo of Indiana.

Waverly-Shell Rock goes 2-1 on final day at Clash

Nelson wrote this in the late afternoon:

ROCHESTER, Minn. — Waverly-Shell Rock finished 18th at the Clash one year after winning it.

The Go-Hawks went 4-2 overall, losing to Iowa City West, 36-25, in its final match.

W-SR beat Omaha Skutt Catholic and Neuqua Valley of Illinois earlier in the day.

The Go-Hawks wrestled without state placewinner Cody Caldwell, and senior Luke Pint suffered a fluke injury against Iowa City West when he landed akwardly while falling out of bounds while in control of the Trojans’ Garrett Hathaway. Pint was leading 4-0 at the time, but the injury clearly affected him as he eventually lost 14-7.

Caldwell was uncertain of the injury, but it appeared to be in the collerbone vicinity. (more…)
